 They should have proper size.

They should Run freely on axel.

They should have grooves with proper

dimensions in order to reduce stresses and
deformation of wire ropes.
• Large diameter needed for better rope life.

• Low diameter reduces cost, space and

centrifugal forces.

• However rope life is generally compensated to

achieve the later one.

• But to keep the extent of wear in rope under

permissible range there exists minimum value
of ratio of drum diameter to the rope diameter.

between 400 – 450

 In general the radius of

groove is approximately

and drums due to lower wear of ropes against CI as compared to steel.
