ABSTRACT

 In this project analysis of flow within Convergent-

Divergent supersonic nozzle of different cross sections
rectangular, square and circular cross section at throat
area .
 Our objective is to investigate the best suited nozzle
which gives high exit velocity among the different
cross sections considered.
 The application of these nozzles is mainly in fire
extinguisher.
 The work is carried out in two stages:
1.Modeling and analysis of flow for supersonic nozzles of
different cross sections.
2.Prediction of best suited nozzle among the nozzles
considered.
 In this, initially modeling of the nozzles in Autodesk Inventor
and analysis will be carrying in Solidworks Flow Simulation
2015 and various contours like velocity, pressure, temperature
have been taken and their variation according to different
nozzles will be studied.
 Compared to square and circular nozzles, rectangular nozzle.
INTRODUCTION
 A nozzle is an extremely efficient device for converting
thermal energy to kinetic energy. Nozzles come up in a vast
range of applications. Obvious ones are the thrust nozzles of
rocket and jet engines.

 Converging-diverging ducts also come up in aircraft engine

inlets, wind tunnels and in all sorts of piping systems designed
to control gas flow.

 The flows associated with volcanic and geyser eruptions are

influenced by converging-diverging nozzle geometries that
arise naturally in geological formations.
 Nozzle is used to convert the chemical-thermal energy generated
in the combustion chamber into kinetic energy.
 The nozzle converts the low velocity, high pressure, high
temperature gas in the combustion chamber into high velocity gas
of lower pressure and temperature.
 Swedish engineer of French descent who, in trying to develop a
more efficient steam engine, designed a turbine that was turned
by jets of steam.
 The critical component – the one in which heat energy of the hot
high pressure steam from the boiler was converted into kinetic
energy – was the nozzle from which the jet blew onto the wheel.

MODELLING OF NOZZLE
To draw the nozzle in Autodesk Inventor Software, the standard
dimensions of nozzle are taken from Journal Paper

 Total length of nozzle = 484 mm

 Inlet diameter = 166 mm

 Throat diameter = 35mm

 Outlet diameter = 183 mm

 Convergent angle = 32 degrees

 Divergent angle = 11 degrees
