STAR Program

Striving Toward Academic Recovery

● Location: Center of Student Success, Wellons Hall Suite M

● Supervisor: Timothy Hunt, MS, CRC, LPCS, LCAS, TAP, CSI

● Mission: Helping individuals who have landed on academic probation, to return and

become successful within academic standings.


Mission Statement

“ To offer a professional and confidential setting for academic coaching provided by graduate
students enrolled in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program and Social Work Program.
The mission of the program is to offer developmental support of students as they pursue
academic recovery and explore personal growth” (STAR Program, 2017).

STAR PROGRAM

STAR Program:

Helps individuals get back on track with some of the following:

1. Coaching
2. Group sessions
3. Study habits/time management tips
4. Positive reinforcement
5. Goal Setting
Core Values & Ethics
The STAR Program follows the guidelines and ethical standards of the American Counseling
Association (ACA), and the National Association of Social work (NASW).

B.1.c. Respect for Confidentiality Counselors protect the confidential information of


prospective and current clients. Counselors disclose information only within appropriate
consent or with sound legal or ethical justification (ACA Code of Ethics, 2015, p.7).

1.07 Privacy and Confidentiality


(a) Social workers should respect clients’ right to privacy. Social workers should not solicit
private information from clients unless it is essential to providing services or conducting
social work evaluation or research. Once private information is shared, standards of
confidentiality apply. (NASW, 2017).
(b) Social workers may disclose confidential information when appropriate with valid
consent from client or a person legally authorized to consent on behalf of a client
(NASW, 2017).
History

The history of STAR?

➢ The STAR Program came into play Fall 2015.


➢ The program was relatively small only consisting of about 10 groups.
➢ Compared to last spring 40 groups were comprised.
➢ The grade point average has tremendously elevated
- GPA 1.13 → 2.13
Need & Future Direction

Students who have been academically suspended:

1. The individual(s) have either appealed the suspension or appealed and sat out waiting to
re-apply to the university. Appealed the suspension and it was approved, returning the
following semester
2. This program also meets with students who are on academic probation who were not
required to submit an academic appeal, however the individual is appealing due to a
financial aid concern.
3. Voluntarily using the STAR Program even in good standing.

Future Direction

To able to work with more organizations (better Partnerships)

Grow in size

Continue with GPA improvements/Coaching Improvements/Behavior Improvements
