REPRODUCTIVE-MEDICINE
ICSI is very similar to conventional IVF in that gametes (eggs and sperm) are
collected from each partner.
The difference between the two procedures is the method of achieving fertilization.
In conventional IVF, the eggs and sperm are mixed together in a dish and the sperm
fertilises the egg ‘naturally’.
It is the process of injecting a single sperm into a single egg using specialized
instrument called micro-manipulator. This fertilized embryo is then transferred into
the uterine cavity. Read More about ICSI treatment in Chennai
EMBRYO TRANSFER
Frozen embryo transfer is the last step in an IVF cycle. Once eggs are collected and fertilised with sperms in the
laboratory, then within the next 3-5 days the best quality embryos will be transferred to the womb. Once
transferred, if the embryo is able to attach itself to the walls of the womb then pregnancy will take place which
can be confirmed by pregnancy tests after 9-11 days from the embryo transfer.
During fresh IVF cycle, we’ll have the capacity to make more than one embryo, however there are no difficulties
connected with multiple pregnancies, so we won’t exchange more than one embryo at once. We’ll suggest
transferring one and freezing the others. If you don’t get pregnant in that first cycle, we can exchange another
embryo during next cycle.
Between day 9-11 after the embryos get transferred, we will go for blood tests to confirm pregnancy.
CRYO FREEZING
Cryopreservation is the process of preserving sperms, excess embryos, blastocysts and more recently oocytes in
a frozen state for future retrieval and usage.
It requires sophisticated, expensive equipment's for the procedure and liquid nitrogen jars for storage. It requires
special media formulated for freezing.
The oocytes, embryos or sperms are at first revealed to cryoprotective agents in order to dehydrate them,
followed by loading into straws, slow cooling and lastly plunging into a temperature of – 196°c in liquid nitrogen
where it can be preserved indefinitely.

EMBRYO FREEZING
Embryo freezing is usually seen as a routine part of IVF and ICSI treatment. It offers
many positive aspects, not least the fact that embryos left over from a fresh cycle can
be stored for future use.
This has implications for the patient's health and well-being - it avoids unwanted
gonadotrophin stimulation and repeated egg collections - and is less costly in the long
run for the patient.
Method of Embryo freezing
1. Vitrification
2. Slow cooling
3. Thawing
