WHAT IS BLOW MOLDING?
• The preformed material (semi-molten tube ) known
as parison is inflated/ blown by air pressure to form a
hollow parts such as bottles jars containers
• Blow molding is best used for making medium-size
hollow containers for large size containers rotational
molding is used.
TYPES OF BLOW MOLDING:
1. Extrusion Blow Molding
2. Injection Blow Molding
3. Stretch Blow Molding
Steps Involved In Blow molding
1. Melt the material
2. Form the molten resin into tube or parison
3. Enclose the hollow parison into close mold
4. Inflate the parison inside the mold
5. Cool the blow molded part
6. Remove the part from the mold
1. Extrusion Blow Molding:
1.1 Continuous Extrusion Blow Molding
PET
• Has the lowest CO2 gas permeability.
• Crystal clear material.
• its mechanical strength is high, but not good enough in a un-stretched
form.
How to make PET with such a high strength and
still a crystal clear appearance?
• Normal melt crystallized PET (cooled slowly) yields
too large spherulites with an opaque and brittle
product.
• Quickly quench gives amorphous (clear) polymer but
too low thermal and mechanical properties.
• Subsequent stretching (above Tg) enhances
crystallinity and strength.
• Further heat setting (annealing at high temp.)
maximizes crystallinity and yields best mechanical
strength.
