What is ISM?

■ The Independent Study Mentorship (ISM) Advanced Academic course is designed for
students wishing to mentor with an adult professional in a chosen career.
■ Students are required to construct an online portfolio that outlines all the work a
student creates throughout their mentorship.
Project Topic: Elective Classes

■ What It Is
– My mentor teaches two elective classes. I want to take a deeper look at why
students take the classes they take and the benefits of taking these classes.
 Why I Did It
– I wanted my project to be different than the basic “Make a lesson plan and
teach for a day”.

■ My current event was about unrest in a school district due to the creation of an
elective called “ Glitz and Glamour for Girls”.
■ The program was meant to promote creativeness among young women.
■ The course was deemed “inappropriate” by many parents.
■ After the outrage, the school board decided to take the course down.
