What is Recreation?
Recreation may be defined as those activities which an individual is not bound
to do, but instead are chose from his establishment of values of what is enjoyable,
satisfying, appealing, or capable of sustaining pleasure and revitalizing his
physical body, mind and emotion.
What are the different recreational activities during the ancient times?
Ancient Egypt
The ancient Egyptian according
to history led a colorful and pleasant
life. They have their recreational
activities like sports which are part of
their education such as wrestling,
gymnastics, ball games and weight
lifting. They also have music, dance
and drama as their form of social
entertainment.
Ancient Greece
During the Golden Age of
Pericles from 500-400 B.C.E., Ancient
Greece, particularly Athens, reached
the peak of its philosophical and
cultural development. They performed
their recreations in several forms such
as the arts, theatre,

gymnastics and athletics which they used as their competition. Sports completion
became part of the daily lives of their people.
The Renaissance
This is marked by the transition from the medieval world to the modern age
which started in France in 1350 C.E. They call this period as “rebirth”. Painting,
sculpture, dancing and drama are their forms of recreation.

Chessboard
This is where the game is
played. It is composed of 64 equal
squares ,alternately placed on the
face of the board. The light colored
square is the “white” square and the
dark colored square is the “black”
square.

Chess Game Pieces

Before the start of the game, each player will be given 16 chess game pieces-
16 light colored pieces for white and 16 dark colored pieces for black The
following are the different chess pieces for each player.

1 Queen 2 White Bishops
2 White Rooks 8 White Pawns
Player 2 (Black)
1 Black King 2 Black Knights
1 Black Queen 2 Black Bishops

Chess Piece and Their Corresponding Moves

The King – the king moves in any adjoining squares that are not under
attack by an opponent. It can only move 2 or 3 squares when castling.

The Rook- can move in any square in rank and in file except when in piece

The Knight – its move is composed of two different steps; first it takes
one step along its rank, and then still, moving away from the square of

What are the rules of the game?

1. White always starts the game by moving a piece followed by black of the
same procedure. This will continue until the game is ended by the
checkmate, resignation, or a flag down clock.
2. When a player threatens the King on his next move by putting a game
piece in front or aligned to its position without a cover or anything
blocking its way, it is called a “check”. If the King is under check, a
player must take an action of moving it to the adjoining square away
from check. If the King has no room to get out of check no matter what he
does, it is called “checkmate”.
Three ways of getting out of check:
a. Move the King to the square where it is out of the checking piece
alignment.
b. Capture the checking piece.

C. Place another chess piece between the checking piece and the king.

Replacing the scrabble tiles

When the player places tiles on the scrabble board, the player draws
another tile on the tile bag to replace the used letter tiles.
The fifty point Bonus
When the player has created a word using his entire tile and was able to
place it on the scrabble board, the player will receive a fifty bonus points.
End of the Game
When all the tiles from the tile and have been taken and used by the
players, it is the end of the game.
Tallying scores
Once the game ended, the points from the tiles left on the tile rack will be

deducted from the total score of the player.
