MODULE
SEVEN POOMSAE TAEKWONDO; KARATE KATA
Learning Targets:
1. Decide and explain what combative sport they want to learn;
2. Give the advantages of earning any combative sport;
3. Watch a video of Poomsae taekwondo or Karate kata;
4. Observe the movements and techniques on Poomsae taekwondo or Karate
Kata;
5. Demonstrate the basic skills of the combative sport that they had chosen.
Opening Prayer
A discipline that enriches the spirit and life by training the body and mind of an
individual. Taekwondo is derived from the three Korean words; Tae which means, foot or
leg; "Kwon" which means, fist or fight; and "Do"which means "the way or discipline".
Poomsae also known as "hyung, is a martial arts forms and standards, comprising of basic
physical movement and patterns philosophies. Poomsae is a series of basic attacking and
defending techniques in a movement pattern and executed with an imaginary opponent(s).
The techniques develop strength, breath control, balance, power, focus, and self- discipline.
1. Look to the left and move left foot into walking stance toward L-1. Then execute a
left low block.
2. Step your right foot toward L-1 into a walking stance with a right center punch.
3. Look to the right and move your right foot clockwise to face R-1 in a right walking
stance. Then, execute a right low block.
4. Step left foot toward R-1 into a walking stance with a left center punch.
5. Look to the left and move your left foot counterclockwise into a left front stance
toward “A”. Then, execute a left low block/right reverse center punch.
6. Look to the right and move your right foot into a walking stance toward R-2 with a
left out to in block.
7. Step left foot into a walking stance toward R-2 and execute a right reverse center
punch.
Karate was only known since 1920’s through its origin dates back over a thousand
years or possible during 5th century. The term “KARATE” came from the two word “KARA”
which means empty and “TE” which means “hand” translated as “empty hands”. It was
around 1609-1868, during the Japanese regime in Okinawa where they prohibited the use of
weapons making the people in the island of Okinawa with their bare hands.
Through it takes time to learn the teachniqueS, Karate’s main purpose is to use this
art as a self-defense by escaping first and fight back and defend yourself from your attacker
if necessary” the art of mind is important than the art of technique”.
Natural Stance (Shizentai stance), feet is in 45 degrees, shoulder length apart with
arms and open hands extended on the side of your body
Kata Heian consists only of 20 movements and wil only take 40 seconds to execute it. This
begins in a attention stance; feet together with your hands on the side and your eyes looking
forward.
As always, begin the Kata in Attention Stance, with feet together, hands at your side and
eyes forward. Every Kata begins and ends from this stance with a bow.
kata stance & right shuto block
1. Left Kata Stance (facing left from starting position) left down-block.
2. Step forward into right kata stance right middle level punch.
3. Front foot behind the back foot 180 degree turn right kata stance & right down-block,
Right foot to left foot, hands come up and hammer fist strike as the right foot returns to
previous position.
