AVCPS PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

Every man and woman are endowed with the dignity of a person, thus, he
or she has inalienable right to education. The Church has an obligation to provide
an education for her children by which their whole lives may be inspired by the
spirit of Christ. A Catholic school is not just an environment for providing a series
of lessons; it operates out of an educational philosophy, which aims to meet the
needs of the young people of today in light of the Church’s faith in Jesus Christ.
It is the religious dimension that makes the Catholic school distinctive. This
religious dimension can be found in (a) the context in which education is delivered,
(b) the means by which the personal development of each student is achieved, (c)
the relationship established between culture and the faith of the Church in the
message of Christ, (d) the fact that all knowledge is informed by and derives its
ultimate meaning from the faith within whose context it is pursued.
It is very important to realize that the Catholic identity of our schools is not
exclusively related to religious instruction and the integration of academic studies
into a unified whole. The Catholic school has a single Christian vision, an integrated
concept of what makes a fully authentic and mature human being. The educational
process is not confined to the curriculum nor to the academic, technical, artistic and
sporting achievements of the school.
The Catholic school should be seen as offering the possibility not only of
exploring the mystery which God is, but also of demonstrating the Gospel inaction.
It must be consistent throughout and in every aspect reflect the Christian faith,
which is its soul, its inspiration, and its justification.

COMPONENTS

LECTURE 1
Physical Fitness

Physical Fitness
A person is physically fit if he/she can do his/her day-to-day activities well without
easy feeling tired.(Wesson, et. Al. 2000)
Stressed that physical fitness is a successful adaption to all the stressors of one’s
lifestyle. (Richard “Dick” Lewontin 1989) (Sports and P.E: A Complete Guide to Advance
Level Study)
Components of Physical Fitness
1. Strength - refers to the greatest force and the ability to apply it. It can be enhanced
through a single or group of muscles in a particular maximal contraction.
2. Muscular endurance - is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to endure
contractions against a resistance over a long period of time.
3. Flexibility - is mostly defined as the ability of the muscles, joints, and tendons to move in
full range motion.
4. Aerobic Fitness - or cardiorespiratory endurance is the ability of the heart and lungs to
sustain energy over a long period of time. One factor that mostly influences this fitness
component is the maximum volume of oxygen, which shows how your body can use
oxygen from moderate to vigorous movement in a physical activity.

5. Body Composition - is the measure of your body fats, in relation to your lean mass. This
component can be a basis for one’s health and well-being because it indicates obesity, which
may lead to some complications like cardiovascular and degenerative diseases.

LECTURE 2
Skill-Related Component of Physical Fitness

This is also referred to as performance-related fitness. It is based on the

neuromuscular system and determines how a person can achieve and successfully
perform a particular skill.

Factors of Skill-related Component

1. Reaction time is the time it takes to start

mowing between a stimulus and a reaction. It
shows how fast you react or respond to a
stimulus. A stimulus is the thing that makes
you react. For example, in basketball, if one
player passes the ball, one of his/her
teammates must be able to catch it fast. If not,
then the opponent may steal the ball. From the
time the ball was caught determines the
reaction time.

2. Speed is the maximum rate a person moves

over a specific distance. How fast a basketball
player runs toward the goal shows his/her
speed.

3. Agility refers to the ability to change direction

quickly. Agility is shown in basketball when a
player is able to move back and forth, left to
right, while running, without being
interrupted by the opponent.

4. Balance is the ability to maintain an

equilibrium in a stationary body position or
when moving. A good basketball player
shows balance. Even if he/she moves fast in
different directions and runs dribbling the
ball, he/she does not slip or fall on the floor.

5. Power refers to the ability to release

maximum energy in the shortest period of
time. Imagine a basketball player, with one
second left, standing on half court, still
managing to shoot the ball on goal. It shows
power.

6. Hand/eye or foot/eye coordination is the

ability of the body to produce smooth fluid of
motion or combination of the hand and eye or
foot and eye movements to perform a task.
An excellent basketball player does not only
run fast but has the ability to see open spaces
where the ball could be passed to his/her
teammates.

S SPECIFIC Make your goal as detailed as you can.

Example: To increase speed
M MEASURABLE Place a figure in your goal so you can tell if you
reach it or not.
Example: To increase speed from 6.5 to at least 5.9
A Set your goal high, but not so high that it seems
ATTAINABLE impossible to achieve.
Example: Attained the previous goal of around 5
difference
R REALISTIC Again, shoot for something that is within reach,
based on your specific capabilities.
Example: Consider other schedule at home and in
school before setting the target goal
T TIMELY Place a date in your goal: this puts pressure on you
to actually do it!
Example: 5 months’ time

LECTURE 4
THE FITTE PRINCIPLE

The FITTE principle enhances the individual’s level in a specific fitness component.
In designing a fitness program, use the FITTE principle to help you maintain and improve
the level of a particular fitness component.

What does the FITTE principle mean?

Letter What does the What does it mean?

letter stand for?
F Frequency How often you perform this exercise
I Intensity How hard you should be working in the exercise
T Type of Exercise This kind of exercise that you should do
T Time How long (in minutes) the exercise is performed
E Enjoyment A key component of a successful long-term fitness
program

Frequency means doing physical activities like training or exercise religiously and regularly.
This can be expressed in the number of days per week.

Intensity means the rate of energy being used during an exercise. The principle applied is
the greater or harder the intensity of physical training, workout, or exercise, the lesser the
time spent in doing the fitness program.

Time is the number of minutes you perform the activity. It goes hand in hand with intensity
since it depends on the amount of workout or physical activities lined up. Time may vary
depending on the physical fitness status of an individual.

Type of exercise is the mode of physical activities you opted to undertake. This may also
differ based on your fitness status and your fitness goals.

Enjoyment refers to the planning of a fitness goal. Choose the activities that you may enjoy
to motivate you too continue attaining your fitness goals.
