Ifugaos’ Famous Artwork

Ifugaos’ are excellent weavers, potterers, and skillful
craftsmen. They use buri, bamboo, nito and rattan that are
abundant in their surroundings.
Ifugaos’ are also well-known for carving the mountain slopes
of the world-famous Banaue Rice Terraces.

Woodcarvings of the Ifugaos

Example:
Bul-ul
- bul-ul is their deity. It is important to them because they
believe they can have an abundant harvest when this carving is placed
near rice granaries.
- the size of bul-ul corresponds with the size of the rice fields.
Hagabi
- It is unique piece of wood carved to become a bench.
This hagabi is sign of riches; thus many wealthy Ifugaos own this
kind of woodcarving.
Textile weavings of the Ifugaos
- Ifugaos weave blankets, upper garments, g-string, hand bags, belts and a lot more.
It has been part of their tradition to weave for their family’s clothing needs.

The Ifugaos’ basket weaving

- Ifugaos produce baskets to serve the needs of the family.
- the most popular material in basket weaving is rattan.
- in Kaingan and Lagawe villages, the split-rattan tradition is commonly used for
household baskets such as the labba, ligao and the plaited storage jars.
-Kokolongkoy vine, the natural luster and resilience of this vine produce flexible
baskets.

Ivatans

northernmost island of our country. Many of them wear
vakul, an abaca fiber-made headgear, to protect them from
