Lesson/Topic: CulturalCommunities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao

Introduction

The ethnic groups in the Philippines are a hallmark of a creative origin of our race. It is natural
for us to be creative and artistic in various fields. Over time, the colorful art of our ethnic groups has
shaped the culture of our country. These arts include the costumes, customs and designs that we will see
in this lesson.

Lesson Objective/s:
(1) characterize the different cultural communities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao according to
their type of dress, body decoration and customs; (A4EL-Ib)
(2) Appreciate the value of different ethnic groups designs; and
(3) create a design from native motifs through crayon etching. (A4EL-Ic)

Key Concept
CLOTHING OF ETHNIC GROUPS

Vakul is a traditional garment among the Ivatans. It is a type

of garment used as a covering on the head and on the back of
the body resistant to intense sunlight and heat. Ivatan women
wear it whenever they work in the hilly gardens of Batanes.
From vakul to dried vuyavoy palm leaves and thin hemp fiber.
At the same time the vakul is worn in containers hanging on the
back made of rattan called yuvuk.

The weaving and wearing of Malong is common among the

T’boli and Maranao ethnic groups. It is a particular art that
women wear with their blouses decorated with gold and other
ornaments. While for men it is veiled around their waists. It can
also be worn on the head and be a veil.

In the mountains of the Cordillera, the Ifugao people wear the

breenchcloth is a type of indigenous and ancient garment that
men usually wear. It is a garment made from an elongated cloth
wrapped around the waist and between the thighs to cover the
genitals. It is often the women who weave the fabrics and
embroider the designs on the bag. The main color of the
breenchcloth is red and it is decorated with white and black
designs.

The T’boli are found in Cotabato in Mindanao. They make a

living by hunting, fishing and gathering fruits in the forest.
Weaving is also one of their livelihoods. The fabric they make
is called t’nalak from hemp fibers. The colors red, black and
white dominate their garments.

Each ethnic group has a different outfit to be proud of. There is something unique in color, shape, and
designs. But despite the differences it still reflects the creative thinking of Filipinos. So keep the following
in mind:
• T’boli fabric is called t’nalak from the fibers of the hemp plant.
• The bahag is the clothing of the Ifugaws found in the Cordillera mountains.
• The weaving and wearing of Malong is common among the T’boli and Maranao ethnic groups.
• Vakul is a traditional garment among the Ivatans. It is a type of garment used as a covering for the head
and the back of the body against the intense sunlight and heat of the sun.
