 Passive Optical Networks (PONs) Attributes
 Fiber Access Technology with no active elements (i.e. electronic elements
that require no power) in the outside plant.
 Uses Passive optical splitters to distribute traffic to the customers.
 Consists of an Optical Line Terminator (OLT) located at the CO and many
Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) located at the customer’s premise.
 Broadband PON (BPON) Attributes
 Based on mature ITU-T G.983 series standards
 Provides up to 1.2Gbps Downstream and 622 Mbps Upstream capacities
 Provides a separate wavelength for downstream video transmission
 Gigabit Capable PON (GPON) Attributes
 Based on ITU-T G.984 series standards that are in progress
 Provides up to 2.5 Gbps capacities for both Downstream and Upstream
 Provides more efficient transport for data traffic

GPON Benefits
 Supports Gigabit or above data rates on the PON
 Optimizes the physical layer for
 Higher data rates for BW intensive applications (e.g. IP Video)
 Greater Distance - reach more customers from the CO
 More Splits - Reach more customers from a single PON
 Offers a more bandwidth efficient protocol for data centric
services
 Has the capability to support multiple services in their native
formats.
 ATM
 Packet (e.g. Ethernet)
 TDM

Why Not GPON Now?

 GPON expected to take another 2-3 years before reaching

BPON comparable maturity. BPON is a Mature Technology
Standard with functionalities available in robust silicone
components.
 The capacity offered by BPON is adequate for the
foreseeable future
 GPON has significant overlap with BPON - ensuring easier
migration when the time is right
 No change in video overlay network
 Same wavelength allocation
 Same fiber distribution network architecture
 Similar TDM/TDMA technique, Dynamic Bandwidth Assignment

BPON to GPON - How Alcatel’s FTTU Platform
evolves
 Alcatel fully supports a migration from the current PON standard ( 622/155
BPON) to GPON
 GPON will enhance and totally support future very high bandwidth service
delivery models
 GPON technology validation (protocol chips and optics) underway along with
reference design – Alcatel Research and Innovation (R&I) organization in
Antwerp, Belgium is presently involved in the development of this technology.
 Alcatel’s strategy for PON data rates is to implement ITU-T G984 technology
supporting the higher data rates of 1.25G and 2.5G in the downstream and
155M, 622M, 1.5G and 2.5G in the upstream.
 The 7340 OLT will support multiple line interface types and a mix of BPON
and GPON interface cards.
 From preliminary work, cost and complexity to build a GPON system is
marginal compared to a BPON system.
 Current schedule is to introduce proof of concept in late 2004 with an initial
product offering in 2005
