Turbines

 Turbine is a rotary machine that

use energy from a fluid flow and
converts it into work.
Kind of Turbines
Water Turbine
It used a potential energy from water flow that is the
result of difference elevation between upstream and the
turbine exit.
Steam turbine
It was driven by steam that produced in either a fossil
fuel fired or a nuclear powered generator.
Gas turbine
. In this part, the working fluid is air mixed with the
gaseous products of combustion
Working Cycle and Air Flow

In the gas turbine engine,

combustion occurs at a
constant pressure, whereas
in the piston engine it
occurs at a constant volume
Compressor

In the gas turbine engine,

compression of the air
before expansion through
the turbine is effected by
one of two basic types of
compressor, one giving
centrifugal flow and the
other axial flow. Both types
are driven by the engine
turbine and are usually
coupled direct to the
turbine shaft.
Combustion Chamber

The combustion chamber has

the difficult task of burning
large quantities of fuel, supplied
through the fuel spray nozzles,
with extensive volumes of air,
supplied by the compressor ,
and releasing the heat in such a
manner that the air is expanded
and accelerated to give a smooth
stream of uniformly heated gas
at all conditions required by the
turbine.
Turbine

The turbine has the task of

providing the power to
drive the compressor and
accessories and, in the case
of engines which do not
make use solely of a jet for
propulsion, of providing
shaft power for a propeller
or rotor.
Exhaust

The velocity and pressure of the

exhaust gases create the thrust in
the turbo-jet engine but in the
turbopropeller engine only a
small amount of thrust is
contributed by the exhaust
gases, because most of the
energy has been absorbed by the
turbine for driving the propeller.
The design of the exhaust
system therefore, exerts
Work began in September 1944
on the 4000 e.h.p. Proteus turbo-
prop originally intended to
power the Bristol Brabazon 2
and Saunders-Poe Princess. The
Proteus first ran in January 1947
and was later used to power the
Bristol Britannia at 4445 e.h.p.
A development of this engine,
the Marine Proteus, is used to
power various patrol boats,
hovercraft and hydrofoils.
