What VBS is?

Vacation Bible School is an evangelistic

Bible Study program for kids, typically offered by
churches once every summer, and usually
running for five days. It centers on a single
theme, involves kid in games and crafts and
most importantly-seeks to share the gospel and
teach biblical truths to children.
How did VBS Begin?
Roots of VBS back to 1894 with a Sunday School teacher named Mattie Prichard
Miles at Hopedale in Illinois during summer lasted for four weeks with 37 children.
Four years later, Mrs. Eliza Hawes –director of the children’s department at Epiphany
Baptist church in New York, became concerned about the children immigrants who lived in
the slums in the lower east side of the city. Started “Everyday Bible School” during the
summer of 1898.
Dr. Robert Boville of Baptist Mission Society recommended it to other Baptist
churches. In 1922 he founded the World Association of Vacation Bible Schools.
The first printed VBS curriculum was produced by standard Publishing in 1923,
designed for three levels (kindergarten, primary and junior) used for 5 weeks
Today, local churches all over the world, including Philippines usually conduct their
own VBS programs for 5days during summer vacation and purchase ready-made VBS
materials from Christian publishers.
