Q1: Culture is a product of religion. This is proven
by the fact that many great religions have
created divisions and conflict among humans.
By relating to the above statement, elaborate
how religion shapes culture and find out how true
the above statement is.
Question Analysis:
1) Culture is what we practise in life.
2) Religion is what we believe and something we worship to.
3) How true that religion shapes culture?
4) Do we agree the fact that many religions have created divisions
and conflict among humans?
Hinduism
– Hinduism is mostly believed by Indian in
Malaysia
– Their cultural practises are based on
their belief which is interpreted from the
Hindu scriptures (Rig Veda).
Caste System
– Caste system is represented
by Purusa’s body structure.
(Hinduism belief)
– Hinduism has to add Caste to
their name. (Hinduism
culture)
– Example: Telegu name their
kids on the caste they come
from such as Rao or Naidu,
whereas the Malayalee’s
would add Menon or Nair.
Diet
– Hinduism believes cow is a taboo animal.
– Based on Vedic scriptures “There is no sin in eating
meat... but abstention brings great rewards.”
– Because of this versus, some scholars interpret it as
dispproval of cow slaughther and meat in general. But
some scholars do not agreed to the interpretation.
– So, this result to some Hindus eat beef and some do
not.
Festival
– Hinduism believe that God Murugan (God of war) was
gifted a lance by Goddess Parvati on Thaipusam.
– Therefore Hinduism celebrate Thaipusam is a
representation of the celebration of victory of good
over evil.
– In Malaysia, we can see how Hinduism practice
Thaipusam at Batu caves.
– The Hinduism pierce their body to appease to the
god.
