Feeding the Next Billion

Collin McGarty, Sage Jones, Ryan Loeber, Addison Deal

The Problem
OVERPOPULATION

Overpopulation is when a population reaches and surpasses a specific area’s carrying

capacity. Overpopulation is a big issue that not only affects you but everyone else.

● Projected to hit 8 billion by 2024

● 11 billion by 2100
● Earth’s carrying capacity is projected to be 10 billion according to Live Science
Limiting Factors
● Food
● Water
● Shelter
● Space
● Resources
● Disease
● War
Our Action
In order to solve this problem we have to take action. For our call to action we chose to
create a machine that can grind up/decompose different compost items so that it can
make it much easier to have soil rich in nutrients which in turn will make it easier for
people to grow more food for themselves.
Our Solution
● Encourage home and urban farming
● Create a way for people of all demographics to garden and produce for
themselves
● A way to fertilize the soil
● Cheap alternative to other fertilizers
● Make a way to grind up compostable material to spread around garden
Benefits
● Enriched soil
● No need for chemical fertilizers
● Reduces the amount of methane emissions
● Produces beneficial bacteria that breaks down to create humus
● Use grass clippings, orange peels, banana peels, egg shells, etc. (Greens)
● Dead leaves, branches, twigs. (Browns)
● Should have 50/50 split of browns and greens
● CHEAP
Blueprint
About our Product
● Very cheap, affordable alternative
● Blades- $0.08
● Can- $0.01
● Rod and handle- $0.30
● Overall- About $0.39 to make

Would have to occasionally sharpen or replace blades

How To Use
● Insert material into the can
● Grind material into a good consistency so you can spread across garden
● Place about 50% into the soil
● Other 50% on top of soil
