Definition
A group of diverse medical and health care
systems, practices, and products that are not
presently considered to be part of
conventional medicine (NCCAM, 2008).
Classification
• Mind–Body Therapies
Imagery, meditation, yoga, music therapy, prayer, journaling,
biofeedback, humor, tai chi, art therapy.
• Biologically Based Therapies
Plant-derived preparations (herbs and essential oils), special diets,
orthomolecular medicine (nutritional and food supplements).
• Manipulative and Body-Based Therapies
Chiropractic medicine, massage.
Classification
• Energy Therapies
Healing touch, therapeutic touch, Reiki, external qi gong,
magnets.

• Systems of Care
Whole systems of care are built upon theory and practice
and often evolved apart from and earlier than Western
medicine
Mind–Body Therapies

• Imagery
- A mind–body intervention that uses the power of the imagination
to bring about change in physical, emotional, or spiritual
dimensions.
- All the senses: visual, aural, tactile, olfactory, proprioceptive, and
kinesthetic
- Condition: Pain

• Music Intervention
- Music to induce relaxation has a regular rhythm (less than
80 beats per minute), no extreme pitch or dynamics, and a
melodic sound that is smooth and flowing.
- A minimum of 20 minutes of music to induce relaxation,
along with some form of relaxation exercise, such as deep
breathing, prior to initiating music intervention (Guzzetta,
1995).
