Why so called ?
1. If it recurves it does so passing over the v/l
2. The wind pushes the v/l further towards the
storm centre
3. The wind is stronger in the advance
quadrant
 So … STAY WELL CLEAR !

NB. SQA question

Evasive Action ~ General

 The Mainer’s Handbook gives advice on

suitable actions

 If the vessel is NOT in the storm field of

influence then you have more options to
avoid the area altogether
Evasive Action ~ Within Storm Field
[North Hemisphere]
Dangerous quadrant / semi-circle

 Put wind on the starboard bow and alter

course (to stbd) to keep on stbd bow as wind
veers. This takes you away from the storm
centre.
NB. Think about effective speed !

(Refer to Notes & Mariner’s Handbook)

Evasive Action ~ Within Storm Field
[North Hemisphere]
On predicted path or in ‘navigable’ semi-circle

 Put wind on stbd quarter.

 Alter course to port as wind backs

(refer to Notes & Mariner’s Handbook)
