The Concept of Force

What are the Daily Activities that requires a
FORCE?

RIDING A BICYCLE
LIFTING AN OBJECT
What is a force?
• Are nothing but actions such as kicking, pushing, lifting etc.
• Can be defined as a push or a pull which acts upon an object as a result of its
interaction with another object.
• Is associated with muscular activity and some change in the velocity.
In this chapter we will be focusing on the relationship
between the force exerted on an object and the
acceleration of that object.
• What happens when several forces act simultaneously on an object?
In this case, the object accelerates only if the net force acting on it is not equal to
zero. The net force acting on an object is defined as the vector sum of all forces
acting on the object. (We sometimes refer to the net force as the total force, the
resultant force, or the unbalanced force.) If the net force exerted on an object is
zero, the acceleration of the object is zero and its velocity remains constant.
That is, if the net force acting on the object is zero, the object either remains at rest or
continues to move with constant velocity. When the velocity of an object is constant
(including when the object is at rest), the object is said to be in equilibrium.
Class of Forces
Contact Forces Field Forces
They involve physical contact w/ Does not involve physical contact
2 objects. between 2 objects but instead act
through an empty space
Fundamental forces in nature are all field forces

• Gravitational force between objects.

• Electromagnetic forces between electric charges.
• Nuclear forces between objects.
• Weak forces that arise in certain radioactive decay processes.
Measuring the strength of a force.
Deformation of a spring to measure force
F1 - as the force that produces a pointer reading of 1.00 cm.
F2 - as the force that produces a pointer reading of 2.00 cm.
