The Wheel and Axle

BY DENIS KUCHER

“Don't reinvent the wheel, just realign it.”

Outline
oWhat is a Wheel and Axle and How it Works?
oExamples
oThe History
oInventions
oWhy do wheels matter?
oWhy we can’t live without it
What is considered a wheel?
1 A circular object that revolves on an axle and is fixed below a vehicle or other
object to enable it to move easily over the ground.
1.1 A circular object that revolves on an axle and forms part of a machine.

The word ‘wheel’ was derived from the language of the people who lived in
modern day Ukraine.
How do wheels work?
Newton's Third Law:
◦ For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction

The action is usually a force being applied from the axle attached to a type of
wheel.

You also have to consider the friction between the axle and wheel

History of the Wheel and Axle
oThe idea of wheels was formed over 15,000 years ago by the human species
oFirst wheels not used for transportation
o3500’s B.C. Potter’s wheel
o3200’s B.C. Chariots
o600-400’s B.C. Wheelbarrow
oWheel started to improve
History of the Wheel and Axle
oWheels weren’t used in the middle east and northern Africa for transportation
until about 600 AD
oTorture
oWheel of fortune
oToys
Inventions using the Wheel and Axle
Concept
oCars
oUse wheels to travel at high speeds on fairly level ground
oTurbine
oUses a axle and wheel concept to take the flow of water or air and convert it to
mechanical energy
oCranes
oThey use pulleys which is essentially a rope going around a wheel on a axle
Why the invention of the wheel and axle
matter?
oLed to inventions that helped people
oWheel chair
oBikes (‘mechanical horse’)
oCars
oGreat impact on society
oGreatly affects the way we travel
o Lots of highways
Living Without Wheels (not recommended)
oWorld would be a very different place
oMore walking, more camels
oCommunities would be built differently
Conclusion
oA wheel is circular object attached to an axle
oWheels have greatly shaped how our society operates
oNo wheels = Camels
