 SMART SCHOOL:

AN ALTERNATIVE
IN LANGUAGE
LEARNING

CALL
qCALL is known as computer-assisted
language learning. It is a form of
computer -based learning.
qCALL originates from CAI that was
invented in 1960’s. The function of
CAI as an aid for teachers.
qCALL has been developed over 30
years, and it has been gone through
three phases;
 a) behavioristic CALL,

CALL IN MALAYSIA
q The CALL policy in Malaysia was formulated
in 1989 which advocated students
acquiring computer literacy in a curriculum
through curriculum approach.
q A few projects have been carried out; ComIL
( the computer intergrated learning
system, 1990)
 Psi( knowledge resources centre, 1993).
q The realization of computers in education is
not new.
q According to Pembangunan Pendidikan
2001-2010,
 the earliest used of ICT in schools was in
qIn 1996, the government announced on
SMART Schools Projects where IT is
extensively included as a teaching
and learning aid.
qBy 2000, 2418 schools were supplied
with computers and each computer
laboratory LAN and Internet
connections for teaching and
learning.
qIn Malaysia, many of CALL initiatives
undertaken by schools, under the
qThe Computer Assisted Language
Learning (CALL) software was
developed by the Educational
Technology Division of the Ministry of
Education, Malaysia as part of the
Smart School program to aid students
in learning English prepositions
SMART SCHOOL
qThe Smart School initiative is one of
the seven
 flagship applications that are part of
Malaysia’s
 Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)
project.
qIt is a new school concept in Malaysia.
The aim is to give students skills,
knowledge and background
technology use and application.
qThe integration of computers in Smart
qThe computer system used in the
Smart School is known as the Smart
School Management System(SSMS).
Its purpose is to manage resources
and processes required to support the
teaching and learning functions of the
school.
qLearning software from MoE were
installed in SSMS for students to use
and monitor by the teacher.
The objectives of the Smart School, which are

based on Malaysia’s National Philosophy of


Education;
q to encourage development of the individual of
intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual
domains
q to provide opportunities for the individual to
develop their special strength and abilities
q to produce a thinking workforce that is also
technologically literate
q to demonstrate education that every children
has equal access to learn and to increase the
participation of all stake holders such as the
parents, the community and the private

USING ICT
qIn spite of the failure in the first phase,
one of the selected school which is a
Smart School, in Kuala Lumpur, is
succeed in the first phase.
qIn terms of CALL, the school has been
using CLE, a courseware developed
by an American company since the
year 2000.
qThe CLE is installed in the school’s lab
that has 21 networked computers. All
the students are involved and
assisted by 16 English teacher, and

CONSTRUCTIVISM
qSocial constructivism is a theory that
concerns with forming knowledge and
meaning from interaction between
their ideas and experiences.
qAccording to Jean Piaget, through
process of assimilation and
accommodation, individuals construct
the new knowledge from their
experiences.
CONCLUSION
qTo conclude, computer and internet has
given the impact on the development
of CALL. The government sees that it
is important to enhance the learning
process, in order to attract students,
to learn English.
