Performance Standards: 1. performs selections from musical plays, ballet, and opera in a
satisfactory level of performance.
2. Creates a musical work using media & technology.
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to;
1. Describes how an idea or story in a musical play is presented in a live
performance or video (MU10MM-IIIa-h-1)
2. Enumerate the examples of Philippine ballet.
Subject Matter:
 Topic: Philippine Musical Plays
 Materials: Laptop, Smart TV.
 Reference: You tube (internet) Horizons Grade 10 Learner’s Material

 Motivation (The teacher will play an example of a Philippine Musical
play and song from Broadway musical.)

B. Lesson Proper
A. Activity
The students will watch a Philippine Musical Play. The students
will describes how an idea or story in a musical play is presented
in the video.
Analysis
1. How is an idea or story presented in Musical Play?
2. What do you think is the difference of Philippine Opera
and Philippine Musical play?
B. Abstraction
Musical Play
- A popular and generally lighter form of musical drama than the
opera. The themes are usually more contemporary, and the musical
melodies are more manageable by the average singer. The acting is
less intense and dramatic, and the choreography and dance
sequences provide entertaining breaks in the unfolding plots.
Examples of Philippine Musical Play
1. Andres Bonifacio: Ang Dakilang Anak-Pawis
Is a five act work commissioned by Alfonso Puyat in 1979,
depecting the life of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio.
 2. Atang-Dulang May Musika
A musical based on the life of the first superstar of the
Philippines. Atang de la Rama.
3. Katy
Is about the life of bodabil star Katy de la Cruz.
4. Florante at Laura
Presented by Tanghalang Pilipino at the CCP Little Theater
(Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino) in celebration of the 200th birth
anniversary of the author Francisco Balagtas-Baltazar.
5. Daragang Magayon
A production for poetry and mixed media, portrays the
myth surrounding the origin of Bicol’s famed Mt. Mayon.
6. Noli Me Tangere
This musical play assumes a more contemporary approach
in the musical compositions owing to Cayabyab’s chromatic and
rhythmically innovative style
7. El Filibusterismo
Staged at the CCP Main Theater as a production of
Tanghalang Pilipino.
8. Magsimula ka
The story of young dreamers whose ambitions begin to
fade amidst life’s realities. A major factor in realizing this hope is
to start and uphold one’s talent or ambition despite all odds.

C. Application
The teacher will group the class into two. Each group will
enumerate the examples of Philippine Musical Play.

EVALUATION

In ¼ sheet of paper. Enumerate the examples of Philippine Musical

play.
