Hay is used to express the existence of

objects or people.
 In Spanish you say Hay
“Hay” is used for both singular and
plural existence.

 In English you say There is OR

There are
 Hay una bañera en el baño.
There is a bathtub in the bathroom.

 Hay diez libros en la estantería.

There are ten books on the bookshelf.

 Hay un refrigerador en la cocina.

There is a refrigerator in the kitchen.

 Hay muchas chicas en el edificio.

There are many girls in the building.
 In English, we have to differentiate between:
◦ in (in the living room)
◦ at (at the house)
◦ on (on the table)

 But in Spanish, we only have one word for

these: en!
◦ en la sala
◦ en la casa
◦ en la mesa
 For yes or no questions, you can simply use
the same sentence, but change your tone of
voice so that it sounds like a question.

 In English, you have to invert the words in

“There is” to “Is there”

 But in Spanish, “Hay” is just one word so there

is nothing to invert!
 In Spanish you say “¿Hay…?”

 In English you say “Is there…?”

“Are there…?”
 ¿Hay una cama en el dormitorio?
