What is the Human Genome Project?

● The word genome relates to the collection of a person’s genes.

● Humans are happy, hormone riddled, heartfilled (Alliteration)
creatures who all have a biological genome.
● The project was used to research the blueprints of a person’s
genes to make advances in science.
● It was the largest ELSI bioethics program to date.

2
What was it trying to accomplish?

● This project was an international effort to find out how the

3 billion pairs of DNA and roughly 20,000 genes were
ordered.
● This allows researchers to understand genes and proteins.
● The main goal was to advance the study of medicine and
biotechnology.

How Does This Project Tie in to Mary Shelley’s Novel?

● In the novel Frankenstein, Dr. Frankenstein experiments with genes which in

conclusion creates a person.
● In a way, The Human Genome Project can be seen as a modern day version of
Frankenstein. (Simile).
● Frankenstein can be seen as a tale to demonstrate the controversial effects of
Human Gene mapping and the overall consequences that may arise because of it.
● In the book, Dr. Frankenstein creates the monster for selfish purposes, but not for
medical reasons, as it is used in present-day science. (Antithesis)
Fun Facts About the Human
Genome

● Fruit flies have helped broaden our knowledge of the

human genome because their lifespans are manageable

for a lab setting.

● There are 19,000 to 20,000 genes in a human genome.

● Most mutations occur in males because there is a larger

cell division in male germ cells.
