UNSYMMETRICAL BENDING Ifa load is not perpendicular to one of the principal axes, it may be broken into components that are perpendicular to those axes and to the moments about each axis, My, and M,y, or M,, and M,,, determined as shown in Fig. 10.11. To check the adequacy of members bent about both axes simultaneously, the AISC provides an equation in Section H1 of their Specification. The equation that follows is for combined bending and axial force, if P,/P, < 0.2: FE Mx, My) i 3p, + (He: + ) =10 (AISC Equation H1-1b) Here, the values are defined as follows: 1. P, is the required axial strength under LRFD or the required allowable axial strength with ASD. 2. P. is the available axial strength with LRFD or the available allowable axial strength with ASD. 3. M,x and M,y are the required design flexural strengths about the x and y axes under LRFD and the required allowable flexural strengths with ASD.
