Grapefruit

Name: Grapefruit
Scientific Name: Citrus paradisi
Family: Rutaceae

Grapefruit is believed to be native to Jamaica. It is sometimes

confused with the pomelo (Citrus maxima), which is a close relation
but is larger and pear-shaped.
The grapefruit tree can grow to a height of 26 to 30 feet. Grapefruits
are round, with a diameter of between 4 and 6 inches. Their thin
skin may be either completely yellow or yellow with a pinkish hue.
The pulp of the fruit may be yellow, pinkish, or reddish. It can be
more or less sharp-tasting, acidic, sweet, and fragrant.
Benefits

High in vitamin C and potassium.

A good source of folate, iron, calcium, and other minerals.
Pink and red varieties are high in beta carotene, a
precursor of vitamin A.
High in fiber, low in calories.
Contain bioflavonoids and other plant chemicals that
protect against cancer and heart disease.
Agricultural Use of Grapefruit
As a relatively new food, the grapefruit has made great
advances in the past 75 years. In 1970, consumption of
grapefruit was temporarily heightened by a widely
promoted "grapefruit diet" plan claimed to achieve a
loss of 10 lbs (4.5 kg) in 10 days and continuous gradual
loss until the achievement of normal body weight. In
1983, the United States Department of Agriculture
Marketing Service reported that, among fresh fruits
and vegetables consumed in Metropolitan New York,
grapefruit was exceeded only by potatoes, lettuce,
oranges and apples.
Agricultural Use of
Grapefruit cont.
Grapefruit is customarily a breakfast fruit. As an
appetizer before dinner, grapefruit halves may be
sweetened, lightly broiled, and served hot, often
topped with a maraschino cherry. The sections are
commonly used in fruit cups or fruit salads, in gelatins
or puddings and tarts. They are commercially canned
in syrup.
Agricultural Use of Grapefruit
cont
In Australia, grapefruit is commercially processed as
marmalade. It may also be made into jelly.
The juice is marketed as a beverage fresh, canned, or
dehydrated as powder, or concentrated and frozen. It
can be made into excellent vinegar or carefully
fermented as wine.
Grapefruit peel is candied and is an important source
of pectin for the preservation of other fruits. The peel
oil, expressed or distilled, is commonly employed in
soft-drink flavoring.
Non-Agricultural use of
Grapefruit
Grapefruit extract is user-friendly, versatile, easy to
use, and environmentally safe, so safe in fact that you
can use it to purify drinking water to kill disease
causing pathogens when traveling, or in cases of
emergency (ten drops per gallon of clear water). It is
often added to homemade cosmetic and medicinal
formulations to extend shelf-life.
Patching Compounds

Add grapefruit extract to any patching, caulking, or

filling compounds to improve resistance to a broad-
spectrum of contamination. This is of particular value
when the substrate may contain moisture and/or some
residue of microorganisms. Citricidal® grapefruit
extract is soluble in water-based, alcohol-based, as well
as organic-solvent-based compounds.
Architectural Coatings (Paint).
Add Citricidal to any coating system, including primer
coats and finish coats, deck stains and sealers, clear
coatings and specialty finishes like STO(trowel able
finish system). Particularly effective in areas of high
humidity, such as restrooms, shower areas, and all
exteriors. Just 10 to 30 drops per gallon will greatly
increase resistance. (More can be added, but may
soften the film slightly. Use more only when fungus or
mildew threat is severe.)
All-purpose Cleaning.
Hospitals, Schools, Day-Care Centers, Nursing Homes,
Residential and Commercial sites. Citricidal® has the potency
of some commonly used industrial disinfectants like
benzelthonium chloride, without the toxic side-effects. Use
Citricidal in bathrooms, on counters, food-prep areas,
garbage containers, and all other susceptible areas. Apply to
all common-use surfaces, such as telephone hand-set,
computer touch-screen, door knobs, and more. Citricidal can
be used alone or in combination with virtually any cleaning
agent. Always use Citricidal in the rinse water after any
cleaning job to leave a protective residue on tile and tile
grout, linoleum, vinyl tile and sheet flooring, painted
surfaces, etc. This will also keep sponges, string mops, and all
other cleaning tools sweet and clean smelling.

viruses and parasite infestations.
There is no scientific evidence that grapefruit seed extract is
an effective treatment, and clinical tests indicate that
grapefruit seeds have little or no antimicrobial properties of
their own. In many commercial products, the additives and
preservatives are actually the ingredients that provide the
antibacterial properties.
Holiopathic use of
Grapefruit

The fruit contains pectin, which is considered good for

settling an upset stomach, due to the fibrous content.

The pectin is also reported to bind carcinogenic

molecules to itself in the stomach, to be eliminated
later.

Considered a good source of vitamin C and the fruit

therefore has excellent antioxidant properties.
Non-convention medicine
application of Grapefruit
Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) or otherwise known as
citrus seed extract is made from the white membranes,
seeds and pulp of grapefruit.  It has anti-viral,
antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties and is most
often used for the treatment of candidiasis, dandruff,
nausea, cold, throat infections, ear aches and diarrhea.
Non-convention medicine
application of Grapefruit
There are many herbs and essential oils that kill
enterococcus, staphylococcus and other bacteria as well
as viruses, which antibiotics are unable to treat.

One of the most popular is grapefruit seed extract, or

GSE, made from the seeds and connecting tissue of
citrus fruit. However physicians using this unapproved,
unconventional therapy have no interest in creating a
medical controversy by reporting their results.
