JUDITH NICHOLLS

Today I am,
Dolphin-over-the waves,
roach and stickleback,
silver mermaid,
turning tide,
ribbon-weed or sprat.
Water drifts through my mind;
I twist, I glide,
Leave fear behind in sand,
wander a land
of turtle, minnow, seal,
where whale is king.
Today-I swim!
 Theme: feeling (happy, powerful, amazing, new,
free, flexible, special, fearless)
 There are many words to describe those feelings.
1. Happy, amazing, special, new: Today I am, Dolphin-
over-the waves.
2. powerful: where whale is king.
3. free: wander a land of turtle, minnow, seal,
4. flexible: Water drifts through my mind; I twist, I
glide
5. fearless: Leave fear behind in sand,
stanza 1: the persona tries to relate himself
with marine creatures which more to say that
he is like one of those, belong to the sea or
water by mentioning about dolphin, roach,
stickleback, mermaid, weed and sprat. He is
describing his feeling being like those
creatures living under water and be very
familiar with the water. This feeling he gets
because he finally knows how to swim and
feels so happy and amazing about it.
Stanza 2: the persona tries to describe the
actions that he does while he is swimming. He
feels free to move and turn his body, he swims
deep under water, goes everywhere in the
water where he could. He feels powerful to be
able to move like fish that swims in the water.
He doesn’t feel afraid anymore and just enjoys
the feeling being under water, imagining
himself as a part of the marine life.
