Concrete Mixing Equipment Overview

This document discusses concrete mixing equipment and conditions for mixing concrete. It provides information on concrete mixers, including that they must be approved and have manufacturer plates showing capacity and drum rotation speed. Concrete can be mixed on site or at a central plant using truck mixers under certain conditions. Truck mixers and agitators must meet AASHTO standards. The document also discusses different types of batching mixers, including drum mixers that can be tilting, non-tilting, or reversing, as well as pan mixers.

CONCRETE MIXING

EQUIPMENT
HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
CONCRETE MIXERS

Concrete may be mixed at the construction site, or at a

center plant or wholly or in part in truck mixers under
the following conditions:
CONDITIONS

1. They shall have manufacturer’s plate showing

the capacity of drum in terms of volume of mixed
concrete and speed of rotation of drum/blades.
CONDITIONS

2. Mixing should be done in an approved mixer

capable f combining aggregates, cement and water
CONDITIONS

3. The mixers shall be equipped with approved timing

devices, which will automatically lock the discharge
lever when the drum has been charged and released
at the end of the mixing figure.
CONDITIONS

4. Truck mixers and truck agitators shall conform to the

requirements of AASHTO M-157.

5. Non Agitator Trucks shall gave bodies that are

smooth, mortar tight capable of discharging the
concrete at a satisfactory controlled rate without
segregation.
BATCHING MIXERS
Batching
- measurement of specified quantity of
ingredient in correct proportion
batching is done by two process.
• 1. By volume batching
• 2. By weight batching
1. By volume batching • 2 . By weight batching
- means measuring - done according to the
ingredient of concrete by weight of ingredients. It is
its volume. more preferable method
to volume batching
BATCHING MIXERS
- mixer into which the ingredients for one
batch are placed, mixed, and discharged
before another batch is introduced —
opposed to continuous mixer
• Drum type mixers
1. Tilting Drum Mixers
2. Non Tilting Drum Mixers
3. Reversing Drum Mixer
4. Pan Type Mixer
* DRUM TYPE MIXERS
Tilting-drum mixer
- have a conical or bowl-shaped drum
with vanes inside. They are preferable
for mixes of low workability and for
those containing large size aggregate.
The mixing chamber which is known as
drum, is tilted for discharging.
Non tilting-drum mixer
• In non-tilting mixers, the axis of the
mixer is always horizontal. The
discharge is obtained either by
inserting a chute into the drum or by
reversing the direction of rotation of
the drum or rarely by splitting of the
drum.
Reversing Drum mixer
- a type of concrete mixer that
produces concrete in single batches.
The entire drum rotates around
its axis as materials are loaded through
a charge chute at one end of the drum
and exit through a discharge chute at
the opposite end of the drum.
Reversing Drum mixer
Pan Type Mixer
• an type mixer is suitable for the
mixing concrete in the laboratory. It
is designed to give efficient mixing of
both dry and wet materials. The
mixing pan is removable and tilts for
easy access to the pan and emptying
on completion of the mixing
operation.
Pan Type Mixer
• It is rotated by a turntable driven by
a protected electric motor. It consist
of mixer with pan, edge and mixing
blades, rubber wheels, reductor.
