Friction between Yarn and Traveller

Methods to reduce friction

Introduction

Friction
• Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces,
fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other. There
are several types of friction: Dry friction is a force that opposes the
relative lateral motion of two solid surfaces in contact.
Introduction
Yarn and traveller friction
• In ring spinning, the yarn is wound on the spindle by having
the force against many natural forces acting on the yarn and
also the traveller. The forces that are acting are frictional
force, centrifugal force, skin friction drag, air pressure drag,
gravitational force.
RESEARCH GAP AND RESEARCH
PROBLEM
• Until now no research has been made regarding this problem.
• The problem is that the friction between yarn and traveller is a major
drawback which consumes power and decreases efficiency in terms
of mechanical losses.
• It also causes abrasion and increases the SFC and protruding fibers.
• This friction also causes breakage of yarn and decreases efficiency.
• Previous work regarding this is done by Mr. AmirShehzad and others
as in references.
Aims and Objectives
• To device a way to use the optimum conditions to decrease yarn and
traveller friction
• To study the process of PVC yarn so that we could fix the problem of
excessive yarn friction
• To device a way to run PVC yarn in such conditions that minimum
friction and losses occur.
Materials and Methods
• Materials used in this project are Polyester, Viscose and
Cotton
• Methods of production include formation of yarn from both
Rotor and Ring spinning techniques.
• Testing methods include breakage testing, denier and HVI
test of cotton, UT4, UsterAfis, Frictiontester
Design of Experiment
• Materials used = cotton , viscose and polyester
• Total Samples = 6
• Sample 1 = 50% cotton+ 50%polyester
• Sample 2 = 50%cotton + 30%polyester + 20% viscose
• Sample 3 = 50% cotton + 20% polyester + 30% viscose
• Sample 4 = 50% cotton + 10% polyester + 40% viscose
• Sample 5 = 50% cotton + 40% polyester + 10% viscose
• Sample 6 = 50% cotton + 50% viscose
Expected outcomes
• We are to find a best running combination for the PVC yarn to have
best running condition with less breakage and possible less friction.
• We also want to increase the running efficiency by implementing less
breakage and less friction which increases power efficiency.
