INTRODUCTION
• Defense mechanism are maneuvers employed by the subconscious mind to
protects and serve our various ego states.
• These are unconscious processes used by individual in adjustment to life
stresses.
• People are often unaware of these processes as they operate .
• Defense mechanism profoundly affect interpersonal, group, and inter-group
process.
• At individual level, they create barriers to interpersonal communication ; at
the group level ,they interfere with the task.
TYPES OF DEFNCE MECHANISM
• Repression : it is complete and involuntary exclusion from memory of
painful or embarrassing present and past experiences.
• projections: it protects people and groups from acknowledgement that they
have undesirable traits or behaviours.
• Regression : it is the process of reverting to more primitive, childlike
behavior in the face of insecurity , confusion, guilt or shame.
• Introjection: it is taking on board some attributes, behavior patterns or
projection of another person or group.
• displacement : it is a substitute activity where blocked or forbidden behavior
is re-directed into safer or more socially acceptable channels.
TYPES OF DEFENCE MECHANISM
As perception linked with the ego, the defence mechanism is often invoked as
one takes offence to an attack on ones perception.
Ego- perception- judgment- attack- offence-defence.
