INTRODUCTION
• Defense mechanism are maneuvers employed by the subconscious mind to
protects and serve our various ego states.
• These are unconscious processes used by individual in adjustment to life
stresses.
• People are often unaware of these processes as they operate .
• Defense mechanism profoundly affect interpersonal, group, and inter-group
process.
• At individual level, they create barriers to interpersonal communication ; at
the group level ,they interfere with the task.
TYPES OF DEFNCE MECHANISM
• Repression : it is complete and involuntary exclusion from memory of
painful or embarrassing present and past experiences.
• projections: it protects people and groups from acknowledgement that they
have undesirable traits or behaviours.
• Regression : it is the process of reverting to more primitive, childlike
behavior in the face of insecurity , confusion, guilt or shame.
• Introjection: it is taking on board some attributes, behavior patterns or
projection of another person or group.
• displacement : it is a substitute activity where blocked or forbidden behavior
is re-directed into safer or more socially acceptable channels.
TYPES OF DEFENCE MECHANISM

• Fantasy : fantasy is the process of creating an entirely make-believe situation


to replace the real one.
• Intellectualization : it is the process of distancing oneself from emotionally
disturbing events or fantasies by responding to them intellectual or abstract
terms.
ROLE OF DEFENCE MECHANISM

• Personality : personality defences are important things in that they strongly


influence the ease with which people are able to form and maintain healthy
relationship . Discriminating when to be defensive and when not to be
defensive is key for health. Developing organically in response to frustrating,
difficult and painful situation and experiences, they function as human
equivalent of computer firewall , helping to defend situation..
• perception : it is based on beliefs, knowledge on accounted timeless facts
.perception often culminate in a conclusion which will need to be defended.
Knowledge requires no defence.
ROLE OF DEEFENCE MECHANISM

As perception linked with the ego, the defence mechanism is often invoked as
one takes offence to an attack on ones perception.
 Ego- perception- judgment- attack- offence-defence.

• Attitude : it act as defence mechanism and insulate thee person from


unacceptable realities of life. They help him in protecting his ego or self-
image and him n living with himself. This aspects of attitudes also obstructs
a constructive approach to problem-solving and comes in the way of
performance of their function of maximizing gains and minimizing losses .
RELEVANCE OF DEFENCE
MECHANISM FOR INTEPERSONAL
RELATIONS
• Splitting : splitting is the process of dividing the individuals and groups into
polarized entities of good or bad ; specific qualities are perceived as being
contained in one and their opposites in another individual or group. At the
interpersonal level, individuals split off the bad parts of themselves to
manage the anxiety associated with unacceptable aspects of the self.
• Projection: projection involves projecting onto other individuals or groups
ones own unacceptable desires and impulses.
• Projective identification : it is an interactive process in which individuals and
group project undesirable aspects of self or group onto individual or group.
