Solid waste

What is solid waste?

Solid waste is any discarded or abandoned
materials.
Some examples of solid waste are scrap
metal, garbage, furniture and many more.
Objectives
• 10.1 ~Distinguishing among reduce, reuse and
recycle.
• 10.2 ~Describing the process involved in waste
reduction.
• 10.3 ~Assessing the impact of solid wastes on the
terrestrial environment.
10.1 ~Distinguishing among
reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce, reuse and recycle, also known as the three
R's, help to cut down the amount of waste we throw
away.
Reduce
This is the concept of reducing what is
produced and what is consumed is
essential to the waste hierarchy.
Reuse
This is the action or practice of using
something again, whether for its original
purpose or to fulfil a different function.
Recycle
To recycle something means that it will be
turned into a raw material that can be
shaped into a new item.
10.2 ~Describing the process
involved in waste reduction.
Waste reduction involves industry in designing
products to reduce the amount of waste that
will later be thrown away.
Ways to reduce solid waste.
• Consume less. Before buying anything, ask
yourself if you really need or want the item/s?
• Eliminate or reduce unnecessary packaging.
• Design products to last longer.
• Develop products that are easy to repair,
reuse, manufacture, compost, or recycle.
• Redesign manufacturing processes to
produce less waste and pollution.
10.3 ~Assessing the impact of solid
wastes on the terrestrial environment.
Some impacts of solid waste
on terrestrial environment.
• Cancer.
• Neurological disease.
• Increase in hospitalization of diabetic residents
living near hazardous waste sites.
• Mercury toxicity from eating fish with high levels
of mercury.
Some environmental impacts of
solid waste disposal on land.
• Erosion and stability problems relating to slopes of the waste
dump.
• Surface water contamination by the run-off from the waste
dump.
• Bad odor, pests, rodents and wind-blown litter in and around the
waste dump.
• Bird menace above the waste dump which affects flight of
aircraft.
• Fires within the waste dump.
• Epidemics through stray animals.
• Acidity to surrounding soil and release of green house
gases.
The End
•Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle.
