What is it?
• Overpopulation is a demographic phenomenon
that occurs when the high density of the
population causes negative consequences in the
environment. These consequences can be of
various types such as damage to the
environment, destruction of ecosystems, famine,
conflicts, decreased quality of life and others.
Overpopulation is considered a contemporary
problem of great relevance because the world
population grows approximately at the rate of
200,000 people per day.
• There are various religious groups, scientists,
researchers and others who have their own
theories about the causes and consequences
of global overpopulation. Although many of
these correspond to completely different
factors and causes, all agree that
overpopulation is a serious problem that in
one way or another will lead the human race
to a catastrophe if the appropriate measures
are not taken.
Collapse: why do some
societies persist and others
disappear?
One of the factors mentioned is human population growth, and even beyond
pointing to this as a problem, indicates that many of the other problems are
direct consequences of the high population density of a given sector. Among
the factors that lead to the collapse of a society are:
1. La deforestación y la destrucción del hábitat
2. Los problemas de suelo
3. Los problemas de manejo de agua
4. La caza excesiva
5. La pesca excesiva
6. Las consecuencias de introducir especies que suelen ser invasoras
7. El crecimiento poblacional humano
