• In the early 1940s,the first electronic programmable
digital computer ,ENIAC using vacuum tubes.
• The next significant advance in computer memory came
with delay line memory, developed by J. Presper Eckert .
• The Williams tube and selectron tube originated in 1946
• In 1947 Jay Forrester,Jan A.Rajchman and An Wang
developed magnetic core memory which allowed for recall
of memory after power loss.
• It was the computer memory of choice throughout the
1960s,until it was replaced by semiconductor memory.
1. Cache Memory
2. Primary Memory
3. Secondary Memory
• Primary memory holds only those data and
instruction on which computer is currently
working.
• It is generally made up of semiconductor device.
• Types of primary memory:
1. ROM
2. RAM
• This type of memory is also known as external
memory or non-volatile memory.
• Contents of secondary memories are first transfer
to main memory and then CPU can access it.
• These are magnetic and optical memories.
• Secondary memories are disk , CD-ROM,
DVD,etc.
1. Cache memory faster than main memory.
2. Data is permanently stored even if power is
switched off.
3. Computer may run without secondary memory.
4. It consume less access time as compare to
main memory
Proper management of memory is vital for
a computer system to operate properly.
