SECTION B.
PHASE DIAGRAM:
• The diagram which represents the components of soil is called phase diagram.
The diagram which represents all the three components of soil i.e., solids, air and water is
called three phase diagram, (figure 2.1).
TWO PHASE DIAGRAM:

• The diagram which shows only two components of soil i.e., solids and air or solids
and water is called two phase diagram, (figure 2.2 and 2.3)
VOIDS:

• Soil mass is generally a three phase system as it contains soils solids along with water
and air. The space covered by water and air in the soils mass is called voids.
• These voids are sometimes filled completely with water and sometime by water and
air. When the voids are completely filled with water, the soil mass is called fully
saturated
• when it is partly filled by water and partly by air, the soil mass is called partially
saturated.
• The soil is called dry when the voids are filled with air only.
THE FOLLOWING RELATIONSHIP CAN BE
ESTABLISHED FROM FIGURE 2.6:
• Va = Volume of air
• Vw = Volume of water
• Vs = Volume of soil solids
• Ma = Mass of air = 0
• Mw = Mass of water Mg = Mass of solids
• V = Total volume of soils mass
• M = Total mass of soil.
