Electrolytes

What is Electrolytes?

Electrolyte is a substance that produces an

electrically conducting solution when
dissolved in water.
Classification of Electrolytes
• Cations
– are the positively charged ions.
• Anions
– are the negative charged ions.
Water
What is water?

Water is the best fluid for hydrating and

regulating the body’s temperatures.
• Active transport
– is a mechanism that requires energy to move ions across cellular
membranes.
• Diffusion
– is the passive movement of ions across a membrane.
Osmolality
What is Osmolality?

is related to several changes in the

properties of a solution relative to pure
water, such as freezing point depression and
vapor pressure decrease.
is an estimation of osmolar concentration of
plasma and is proportional to the number of
particles per liter of solution.
