INSULIN

IRAM CASTILLO
INSULIN
Is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows our body to
• use sugar from the food that we eat for energy or
• to store glucose for future use.
IMPORTANCE
If the body doesn’t produce
enough insulin or the cells are
resistant to the effects of insulin,
you may develop hyperglycemia
(high blood sugar), which can
cause illness, like diabetes.
OLD WAY INSULIN PRODUCTION
• Insulin from cattle and pigs was used for many years to treat diabetes
and saved millions of lives, because pork- and beef-derived insulin are nearly identical to human
insulin and can be utilized by our bodies. But it wasn’t perfect,
because it caused allergic reactions in many patients.
Now, we produce insulin
without needing to depend on animals, we
can produce insulin in unlimited supplies,
that not contains any of the animal contami-
nants.
