• Khajuraho is a town in Madhya Pradesh,
located in Chhatarpur district.
• Khajuraho is a world famous site known
for its magnificently sculptured
historical group of Hindu and Jain
temples.
• Khajuraho is surrounded by the Vindhya
Range.
• The city is surrounded by Khojar river in
the south, Ken river in the north east,
Beni Sagar resrvoir in the south west.
History
• About 85 temples were built from 950 – 1050 A.D. by
Chandela Dynasty, a dynasty which survived for five
centuries before falling to the onslaught of Islam.
• Temple building was a tradition of Chandela rulers and every
ruler built at least temple during his reign.
• Khajuraho is believed to be the religious capital of Chandellas,
political capital was Mahoba, 60km away.
• In 1838, a British India Army Captain named T. S. Burt
rediscovered them. By this time only 22 of the original 85
temples had survived.
• Khajuraho derives its name from the Khajoor tree (the Date
palm tree) one of the famous fruit of India which can be found
in abundance in the area.
Architecture
• Khajuraho temples depict some of the finest art and sculptor in
the world and hence they have been included in the list of
UNESCO World Heritage Sites by UNWTO in 1986.
• The temples are famous for their Nagara-style architectural
symbolism.
• Material used in construction of these medieval temples is
sandstone and granite.
• The walls of these temples are full of arts like meditation,
spiritual teachings etc.
• All the temples are east-facing.
Based on their geographical location, the temples are categorized into
three groups:
Western, Eastern, Southern.

sculptors of Shiva,

Khajuraho Dance Festival
• The Khajuraho Dance Festival takes place during the spring
and this festival celebrates the splendor of the temples. This
festival of classical dance is held every year in February or
March and continues for a week.
• This cultural festival highlights the richness of the Indian
classical dance styles such as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi,
Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali.
• The dances are performed in an open air auditorium.
Tourism In Khajuraho
• Tourism is the main activity of local people.
• Tourism activities remain high from October to March month
due to various reasons like climatic condition, holidays,
festivals etc.
• Apart from temples, their are many more places to visit in
Khajuraho like village walk, small pond, cycling around town,
bikes are available to visit nearby attractions like Raneh fall,
Pandav fall, Chousat Yogini temples etc.
• Best time to visit is March to June: These months constitute
the summer season in Khajuraho. While the weather in March
is quite pleasant and comfortable for a city tour. April and May
can be hot, especially during afternoons when
the maximum temperature can go up till 47 degree Celsius.
• In 2015 MP received a tourist footfall of 4.21 lakh which
declined to 3.6 lakh in 2016 out of which 25% i.e. 90000 was
of Khajuraho.
Accesibility
• Khajuraho is served by Civil Aerodrome Khajuraho (IATA
Code: HJR), with services to Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and
Mumbai.
• Local taxis and tour and taxi services are easily available to
pick you up and drop you at airport from any locations of the
Khajuraho.
• The site is also linked by the Indian Railways service, with the
railway station located approximately six kilometres from the
entrance to the monuments.
