 In 1768, the first steam powered automobile capable
of human transportation was built by Nicolas-Joseph
Cugnot.

 In 1807, François Isaac de Rivaz designed the first car

powered by an internal combustion engine fuelled
by hydrogen.
 In 1886 the first petrol or gasoline powered automobile
the Benz Patent-Motorwagen was invented by Karl
Benz. This is also considered to be the first "production"
vehicle as Benz made several other identical copies.
 At the turn of the 20th century electrically
powered automobiles appeared but only occupied a
niche market until the turn of the 21st century.
 According to Ministry of Industries, Pakistan produced its first
vehicle in 1953, at the National Motors Limited, established
in Karachi to assemble Bedford Trucks. Subsequently buses,
light trucks and cars were assembled in the same plant. The
industry was highly regulated until the early 1990s. After
deregulation, major Japanese manufacturers entered in
the market thereby creating some competition in this
sector. Assemblers of HINO Trucks, Suzuki Cars (1984),
Mazda Trucks, Toyota (1993) and Honda (1994) in
particular, entered once deregulation was introduced.
Assembly of Daihatsu and Hyundai cars (1999) and various
brands of LCVs and range of mini-trucks commenced
recently.
 From 1953 to 2016, the journey of auto industry has been
rough, tough and sometime very smooth. Car industry saw
boom in 2006-2007 when sales touched record peak of
180,834 thanks to rising car financing up to 70-80 per cent
by banks due to low interest rates and rising rural buying.
 The automobile industry in Pakistan includes
companies involved the production / assembling of
passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks,
buses, tractors and motorcycles. The auto spare parts
industry is an allied of the auto industry. The auto &
allied industry form a major sector in Pakistan.
 A car is a wheeled, self-powered motor vehicle used
for transportation and a product of the automotive industry. Most
definitions of the term specify that cars are designed to run primarily
on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have
four wheels with tyres, and to be constructed principally for the
transport of people rather than goods.

 Auto Sector remains the second largest payer of indirect taxes after
the Petroleum Sector. In Pakistan's context there are 10 cars in 1,000
persons which is one of the lowest in the emerging economies which
itself speaks of high potential of growth in the auto sector and more
so in the car production. Rising per capita income with changing
demographic distribution and an anticipated influx of 30 to 40 million
young people in the economically active workforce in the next few
years provides a stimulus to the industry to expand and grow
The government has announced the Automotive
Development Policy 2016-21. The government’s brief on the
automobile policy insists that the policy encourages new
manufacturers to enter the market while promoting the latest
technologies. The policy itself sounds grand but a look at the
fine print confirms that the government has done little to open
up the highly restricted industry. Pakistan’s existing automobile
policies restrict competition and reinforce the monopolies of
about three companies. Pakistan has restricted the import of
brand new vehicles all the while creating high barriers to entry
for new automobile companies to begin assembly or
manufacturing in Pakistan. While the new policy offers some
tax incentives for new entrants into the market, it does not go
far enough to tackle the existing monopolies. Allowing the
continued import of used cars is not a policy, it is a necessity
since existing car assemblies in the country are barely able to
meet the demand.
With European companies, including Volkswagen, and some
Chinese investors expressing interest in beginning
manufacturing in Pakistan.

FINDING CONCLUSION:

 In future there will be intense competition in the

market due to the entrance of new companies
in the market with many new products. As the
new assemblers Kia and Hyundai has started its
local production, Dewan Farooque and
Daihatsu Coure has really potential to change
the auto scenario in Pakistan . But the
imperative is the development and progress of
Auto industry in order to provide consumer with
high quality, low priced locally manufactured
products.
EXPECTED COMPETITORS
 Volkswagen,Fiat,Nisaan, has expressed its interest to set up
operations in Pakistan following Nissan’s and many other
international automobile manufacturers’ intention to enter in
the Pakistani automotive market. However, their final decision to
tap the Pakistani market will hinge upon incentive given to new
entrants and the sustainability level of the auto policy.
