QUADRATIC TRINOMIAL
IN THE FORM
ax 2 + bx + c where a > 1
RECALL: GIVE THE FACTORS OF THE FOLLOWING
1) 12a2b2c3 + 4abc 6) 2x2 + 4x + 2
2) 6x4 – 3x3 7) 49x6 – 36y2
3) 200a2 -18b2 8) x2 + 23x - 78
4) 16a2 – 16a + 4 9) x2 + 21x + 98
5) 20a2- 4a + 5 10) x2 - 11x - 60
Multiply the following:
1.(2k – 3) (k – 4) 2k2 – 11k + 12

2.(3x + 5) (x + 1) 3x2 + 8x + 5

3.(3z + 2) (2z – 3) 6z2 – 2z - 6

Factoring quadratic trinomial in the form ax2 + bx + c where a > 1 can use the
following steps:
Illustrative Examples
Factor 2k2 – 11k +12
Follow the steps:

1. Find the product of the leading term and the last term 2k2 – 11k + 12
2. Find the factors of 24k2 whose sum is -11k. (2k2) (12) = 24k2
3. Rewrite the trinomial as a four-term expression by replacing the middle term with the sum
of the factors. (-3k) + (-8k) = -11k
4. Group the terms with common factors. 2k2 – 8k – 3k + 12
5. Factor the groups using greatest common monomial factor. (2k2 – 8k) + (-3k + 12)
6. Factor out the common binomial factor and write the remaining factor as a sum or
difference of the common monomial factors. 2k (k – 4) – 3(k – 4)
(k – 4)(2k – 3)
3x 2 + 8x + 5 = 2
(3x ) (5)
= 15x 2

= (3x) (5x)
2
= (3x + 3x) + (5+ 5x)
= 3x(x + 1) + 5(1 + x)
= (3x + 5) (x + 1)
Factor the following:
2
1. 2x + 7x + 3
2. 3x2 – 4x – 7
3. 3x – 8x + 4
2
A.Factor the following:
1.2x2 + 3x + 1
2.2x2 – 3x – 2
3.25a2 – 10a + 1
B. Answer the following:
1.One of the factors of 11x2 + 23x + 2 is
(x + 2 ). What is the other factor?
2. Find the missing terms: 3x2 – 4x – 15 =
(x - ___)(___ + 5)
Follow up
Factor the following:
1) 2x + x – 6
2

2) 6x2 – 20x + 6
