number of employees.
 Software requirements: SAP is for application

software, Oracle for database, OS could be Linux,

Unix or windows etc.
 LAN: Local area networks has to be optical fiber

based 10G LAN for connecting all the servers on

the network.
 Communication Links between HQ, Regional office

and other remote offices to access the ERP servers.

 Data Centre: The place where all the servers,
Communication links, Routers etc resides. The
connectivity to & fro from the HQ to regional
office is maintained.
 Disaster Recovery (DR) Centre: This is the replica
of the data centre and used in cased the case of
disaster recovery in case of any calamity like
earth quake.
 Storage Area Network: This is a big network
implemented between the servers at data centre.
 Backup : Backup of the data is very essential and
it has to be taken on daily basis/ weekly basis.
ERP implementation: NTPC being the power
generation utility, having 35 power projects
across the country. It is having Corporate centre
with 7 regional centers and many commercial
offices. To have the uniform data of finance, HR,
material and other areas, it was decided to have
ERP implementation in NTPC.
1. Planning for implementing ERP: A lot of study
and presentation, brainstorming etc done with in
NTPC. Identification of the functional teams
across NTPC. Training for functional leaders.
2. It took more than 1 year to identify and the core
requirement and how it can be adjusted with SAP,
what would be the changes required in the SAP
for meeting the requirement of NTPC.

was decided to rollout ERP in 5 projects.
 Team advanced business application
programming (ABAP), Team Basis and Team
Communication was created and training has
been given to all of them.
 SAP consultants sits in NTPC for the
implementation of SAP.

with 10 servers in a room. When data centre
become ready there was about 70 servers
installed , SANs , and complete backup system
was implemented.
 Disaster Recovery Centre started at Hyderabad,
this was the complete replica of the data centre.
 After implementing at 5 locations and resolving
the problems, NTPC decided to rollout ERP in
other locations in phases.

All the material to be procured, now have the unique material code all
across NTPC and it is beneficial during overhauling.
 E-Tendering-

◦ Material available at one place can be identified
immediately and send to another place where it is
required for maintenance of turbine.
 HR Management-
Management can have the details of individual employees.

 Finance Management-
◦ To reconcile the in balances between revenues and
expenditures.
 Lack of training and information among the
users.
 Too much dependability on Communication

Networks and Local area network.

 Risk for servers getting crashed.
 Heavy cost involved in the ERP

implementation.
 Lack of implementability in geographically

dispersed clusters.
