VARIABLE RELUCTANCE MOTOR

(VRM)
-REVANT SHARMA(162152)
• Variable reluctance motor (VRM) can also be referred to as a switched
reluctance motor due to the fact that it requires a switching invertor to drive
the motor.

• This motor operates on the principle of variable reluctance, which is similar to

that of a single stack VRSM.

• It runs at high speeds (2*10^5 rpm).

• It is designed for continuous rotation.

• It consists of concentric windings on the stator end but no windings on the

rotor.

WORKING OF A VRM :-
• It operates on the principle of variable
reluctance. The reluctance of the stator
windings depend on the position of the
rotor.
• As in the figure, when phase winding A is
excited, the rotor rotates towards phase
winding a to maximise the flux linkage of
stator and rotor.
• When phase winding A is deenergised and
phase winding B is energised, the rotor
moves counter clockwise towards phase
winding B to maximise the flux linkage.
• To achieve continuous rotor rotation, the
phase current to stator phases are
switched on and off in synchronism with
the rotor to average a steady torque. Operation of a VRM
• For the above, a Hall effect type or an
electro-optical type sensor is a must.
TORQUE GENERATION OF A VRM -
• Under the assumption of magnetic linearity, reluctance torque is-

• Torque is independent of current direction. However it is dependant on the variation of rotor

position to stator.
• Thus the torque of VRM depends on –
1) Number of stator and rotor poles.
2) Pole arcs of both stator and rotor poles.
• The variation of torque with Inductance is observed below.
