Blood Pressure Survey

High Salt In-takers

Vs
Low Salt In-takers

By Sowmya Anand
Abstract
• Is there a significant difference in blood
pressure between high and low salt in-
takers?
• Blood Pressure measured for people having
low and high salt intake using BP monitor.
• Independent measure t test used.
• Significant difference found between these
two groups.
Introduction
• Hypertension affects majority of people. Many
people are curious whether dietary habits like less
salt intake would reduce blood pressure. This
survey will answer their curiosity.
• This survey helps a doctor to explain to a patient
about the need of low salt diet.
• Emphasizes Dietician to prepare low salt diet chart
for a hypertension patient.
Hypothesis
• There is no significant difference between
high salt in-takers and low salt in-takers.
• U1 = U2
• Two tailed hypothesis since it is non-
directional.
• Alpha level is 0.05.
Methodology
• Non random sampling is done.
• Sample from Toscana apartment, Austin.
• 20 Samples selected.
• Depending on their salt intake they are classified
as High and low salt in-takers.
• Group A = high salt in-takers.
• Group B = low salt in-takers.
• Blood pressure measured on 12/7/2003 using
sphygmomanometer between 10 AM to 12 Noon.
• Systolic Blood pressures are recorded.

Inferential Statistics

Since p < 0.001, hypothesis formed is rejected.

There is significant difference in blood pressure.
Between high and low salt in-takers.
This analysis shows that salt intake is a major
factor related to hypertension.
Possible Errors
1. Sampling Error
2. Other factors that influences blood pressure like
hereditary factors, age, environmental factors like
sample in high stress conditions and sample rarely
with retinal hemorrhages, obesity and others.
3. Classification as high and low salt intakers does not
follow any measurement scale.
Conclusion
Results shows that there is significant differences
between high and low salt in-takers.
Limited Scope of the survey because of possible.
Errors mentioned.
