Corrosion causes a lot of problems:

The operational reliability of structures can be

jeopardized.

Natural Resources are lost

The environment can be damaged.

What is Corrosion?

Latin origin means “Go Away”

It is defined as the deterioration of a material resulting

from chemical attack by its environment
BASIC CORROSION CONCEPTS

Corrosion is a physicochemical interaction between a

metal and its environment which results in changes in the
properties of the metal and which may often lead to
impairment of the function of the metal, the environment,
or the technical system of which these form a part.
Corrosion Effect: Change in any part of the corrosion
system caused by corrosion.
Corrosion Damage: Corrosion effect which is considered
detrimental to the function of the metal, the environment or
the technical system of which they form a part.
Basic Electrochemical Concepts

The processes involved in corrosion are to a large extent

electrochemical in nature.
An electrochemical reaction is characterized by the fact
that, it takes place with donating or receiving of electrons.
