ELECTROCHEMISTRY AND REDOX REACTION

A. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS
1. Electrochemistry
Electrochemistry is the study of chemical processes that cause electrons to
move. This movement of electrons is called electricity, which can be generated by
movements of electrons from one element to another in a reaction known as an
oxidation-reduction ("redox") reaction.
2. REDOX Reaction
Redox reactions are oxidation-reduction chemical reactions in which the
reactants undergo a change in their oxidation states. The term ‘redox’ is a short form of
reduction-oxidation. All the redox reactions can be broken down into two different
processes – a reduction process and an oxidation process.
3. Oxidation
Oxidation is the loss of electrons during a reaction by a molecule, atom or ion.
Oxidation occurs when the oxidation state of a molecule, atom or ion is increased. The
opposite process is called reduction, which occurs when there is a gain of electrons or
the oxidation state of an atom, molecule, or ion decreases.
4. Reduction
Reduction involves a half-reaction in which a chemical species decreases its
oxidation number, usually by gaining electrons. The other half of the reaction involves
oxidation, in which electrons are lost. Together, reduction and oxidation form redox
reactions (reduction-oxidation = redox). Reduction may be considered the opposite
process of oxidation.
5. Cathode
When we talk about cathode in chemistry, it is said to be the electrode where
reduction occurs. This is common in an electrochemical cell. Here, the cathode is
negative as the electrical energy that is supplied to the cell results in the decomposition
of chemical compounds. However, it can also be positive as in the case of a galvanic cell
where a chemical reaction leads to the generation of electrical energy.
6. Anode
In the most basic form, an anode in electrochemistry is the point where an
oxidation reaction occurs. Generally, at an anode, negative ions or anions due to its
electrical potential tend to react and give off electrons. These electrons then move up
and into the driving circuit.
7. Electrolysis
The use of electric current to stimulate a non-spontaneous reaction. Electrolysis
can be used to separate a substance into its original components/elements and it was
through this process that a number of elements have been discovered and are still
produced in today's industry. In Electrolysis, an electric current it sent through an
electrolyte and into solution in order to stimulate the flow of ions necessary to run an
otherwise non-spontaneous reaction. Processes involving electrolysis include: electro-
refining, electro-synthesis, and the chloro-alkali process.
B. REDOX REACTION
First Video
1. What is the metal deposited in the copper whire?
-Silver is the metal deposited in the copper wire.
2. Which metal is reduced?
-Silver is the metal that is reduced.
3. What is the oxidation number of the metal being reduced?
-The oxidation number of silver is 1+.
4. Which metal is oxidized?
-The metal that is being oxidized is copper.
5. What is the oxidation number of metal being oxidized?
-The oxidation number of copper is 2+.
6. Write the REDOX reaction.
Cu + 2AgNO3→ Cu(NO3)2 + 2Ag.

Second Video

1. What is the identity of the precipitate?

- Solid copper is the identity of the precipitate.
2. Is it being oxidized or reduced?
- It is being reduced.
3. Why is it that the copper solution with copper metal retain its color?
- I think the reason why the copper solution with copper metal retain its color is
because of the reactivity of copper metal in the solution are the same.
4. What other evidences/ observations that you have observed in the video that a
REDOX reaction really occurs?
- When the metals like zinc, iron, and aluminum are formed like bits and
submerged in the CuSO4 solution, REDOX reaction will occur. Their original
shape is being changed and oxidized.

C. Electrochemistry / Voltaic Cell

1. Differentiate Voltaic/galvanic cell from electrolytic cell.
- Electrolytic cell is where an electrical energy from an outside source is being
used for a chemical reaction to happen while galvanic cell creates an electricity
by means of chemical reaction.
2. Is the reaction spontaneous or not?
- Both the reaction in Voltaic and Galvanic is spontaneous but the electrolytic cell
is non-spontaneous.

Conclusion/ Generalization
Therefore, I conclude that REDOX reaction happens depending on the reactivity of metals in the
reaction. There are many factors that can affect the reaction such as their shape, color, and
weight. The element who losses electrons is being oxidized while the element that gains
electrons is being reduced.
