Phishing is a form of fraud in which an
attacker masquerades as a reputable entity
or person in email or other communication
channels. The attacker uses phishing emails
to distribute malicious links or attachments
that can perform a variety of functions,
including the extraction of login credentials
or account information from victims.
PHISHING
Spoofing, in general, is a
fraudulent or malicious practice in which
communication is sent from an unknown
source disguised as a source known to
the receiver. Spoofing is most prevalent
in communication mechanisms that lack
a high level of security.
SPOOFING
• A criminal act that involves malicious
threats intended to cause injury to an
individual to compel him or her to do an
act against his or her will. Blackmail or
extortion often involves a threat to spread
information about the target that will
defame his or her reputation or bring
criminal actions against him or her unless
some amount of money is paid to the
individual making the threats.
3. ACCESSING STORED
COMMUNICATIONS
The Crime: Intentionally accessing, without
authorization, a facility through which an
electronic communication service is provided.
The Time: Hacking someone's email account for
the purposes of commercial advantage, malicious
destruction, or in furtherance of any crime carries
a maximum five year sentence for first time
offenders. Hacking into an email account in all
other cases comes with a maximum one year
sentence. Now go change your password.
THE TIME: THIS STATUTE COVERS
GENERAL WIRE FRAUD, BUT ALSO
APPLIES TO THE MOST COMMON
SCHEME OF NOT RECEIVING WHAT
YOU WON AND PAID FOR IN AN
ONLINE AUCTION. IF THE SCAM
ARTIST EVER GETS CAUGHT, HE OR
SHE FACES AS MUCH AS 20 YEARS IN
PRISON.
4. SPORTS BETTING
SPORTS BETTING IS THE ACTIVITY OF PREDICTING SPORTS
RESULTS AND PLACING A WAGER ON THE OUTCOME. THE
FREQUENCY OF SPORTS BET UPON VARIES BY CULTURE,
WITH THE VAST MAJORITY OF BETS BEING PLACED ON
ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL, AMERICAN FOOTBALL,
BASKETBALL, BASEBALL, HOCKEY, TRACK CYCLING, AUTO
RACING, MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, AND BOXING AT BOTH
THE AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL LEVELS. SPORTS
BETTING CAN ALSO EXTEND TO NON-ATHLETIC EVENTS,
SUCH AS REALITY SHOW CONTESTS AND POLITICAL
ELECTIONS, AND NON-HUMAN CONTESTS SUCH AS HORSE
RACING, GREYHOUND RACING, AND ILLEGAL,
UNDERGROUND DOG FIGHTING.
5. NON-DELIVERY OF
MERCHANDISE
Non-delivery of merchandise is
a scheme most often linked to Internet
auction fraud, in which a seller on an
Internet auction website accepts payment
for an item yet intentionally fails to ship
it. Sellers like these sometimes will relist
the item and attempt to sell it again
through a different username.
NON-DELIVERY OF MERCHANDISE CAN ALSO BE
CONSIDERED A FORM OF BUSINESS FRAUD IN A NUMBER OF
CASES. FOR EXAMPLE, SOME WEB-BASED INTERNATIONAL
COMPANIES ADVERTISE IN THE U.S. FOR AFFILIATE
OPPORTUNITIES, OFFERING INDIVIDUALS THE CHANCE TO
SELL HIGH-END ELECTRONIC ITEMS, SUCH AS PLASMA
TELEVISION SETS AND HOME THEATER SYSTEMS, AT
SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED PRICES. WHEN THESE ITEMS SELL
AND THE FUNDS ARE FORWARDED TO THE COMPANIES
FROM THEIR AFFILIATES, THE ITEMS FAIL TO SHIP TO THE
INDIVIDUALS WHO SOLD THEM AND THUS NEVER MAKE IT
TO THEIR RESPECTIVE BUYERS.
CYBERBULLYING IS BULLYING THAT TAKES PLACE OVER
DIGITAL DEVICES LIKE CELL PHONES, COMPUTERS, AND
TABLETS. CYBERBULLYING CAN OCCUR THROUGH SMS,
TEXT, AND APPS, OR ONLINE IN SOCIAL MEDIA, FORUMS,
OR GAMING WHERE PEOPLE CAN VIEW, PARTICIPATE IN,
OR SHARE CONTENT. CYBERBULLYING INCLUDES SENDING,
POSTING, OR SHARING NEGATIVE, HARMFUL, FALSE, OR
MEAN CONTENT ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE. IT CAN INCLUDE
SHARING PERSONAL OR PRIVATE INFORMATION ABOUT
SOMEONE ELSE CAUSING EMBARRASSMENT OR
HUMILIATION. SOME CYBERBULLYING CROSSES THE LINE
INTO UNLAWFUL OR CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR.
7. CHILD
PORNOGRAPHY
CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IS A FORM OF CHILD SEXUAL
EXPLOITATION. FEDERAL LAW DEFINES CHILD
PORNOGRAPHY AS ANY VISUAL DEPICTION OF SEXUALLY
EXPLICIT CONDUCT INVOLVING A MINOR (PERSONS LESS
THAN 18 YEARS OLD). IMAGES OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
ARE ALSO REFERRED TO AS CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES.

Federal law prohibits the production, distribution,

importation, reception, or possession of any image of
child pornography. A violation of federal child
pornography laws is a serious crime, and convicted
offenders face fines severe statutory penalties
PROSTITUTION
Prostitution is the criminal act of providing, or
offering to provide, sexual services in
exchange for compensation. Prostitution laws
penalize those who sell sexual services, as well
as those who purchase the services. Laws are
also in place to punish those who arrange
prostitution, or benefit from it in any way. To
explore this concept, consider the following
prostitution definition.
What is Prostitution
Prostitution, often referred to as the “oldest profession in the
world,” is the act of exchanging money or other compensation
for sexual services. Prostitution is illegal in all states except for
Nevada, where it is regulated by very strict laws. Prostitution laws
specify that offering, agreeing to, or engaging in a sexual act, in
exchange for money or other consideration, is illegal.

For an individual to be charged with a prostitution-related crime,

it is not necessary for money to actually change hands, or for
offered sexual services to actually be provided. For a successful
prosecution for prostitution charges, the prosecutor need only
prove there was an intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
DRUG TRAFFICKING
Delivering, distributing or dispensing a
controlled substance by means of the
internet. Darknet markets are use to buy
and sell recreational drugs online. Some
drug traffickers use encrypted messaging
tools to communicate with drug mules. The
dark website silk road was a major online
marketplace for drugs before it was shut
down by law enforcement ( then reopened
under new management, and law
enforcement again)
CRIMINAL COPYRIGHT
INFRINGEMENT
• Criminal copyright infringement, the act of
piracy mainly for financial gain. In late
2014, the number one pirate website, the
PirateBay, was raided or the second time
due to years of pirating movies, music,
games, books, and other software. These
kind of website earn money through
advertising.
