More discussion of forces
A force is a push or pull upon an
object resulting from the
object's interaction with another
object. Whenever there is
an interaction between two objects,
there is a force upon each of the
objects. When the interaction ceases,
the two objects no longer experience
the force. Forces only exist as a result
of an interaction.
Contact forces are those types
of forces that result when the
two interacting objects are
perceived to be physically
contacting each other. Examples
of contact forces include
frictional forces, tensional
forces, normal forces, air
resistance forces, and applied
Action-at-a-distance (non-
contact) forces are those
types of forces that result even
when the two interacting
objects are not in physical
contact with each other, yet
are able to exert a push or pull
despite their physical

Force
Applied Force
Spring Force
An applied force is a force that is
applied to an object by a person or
another object. If a person is pushing a
desk across the room, then there is an
applied force acting upon the object.
The applied force is the force exerted
on the desk by the person.
The normal force is the support force
exerted upon an object that is in contact
with another stable object.

For example, if a book is resting upon a

surface, then the surface is exerting an
upward force upon the book in order to
support the weight of the book. On
occasions, a normal force is exerted
horizontally between two objects that are
in contact with each other. For instance, if
a person leans against a wall, the wall
pushes horizontally on the person.
The friction force is the force exerted by
a surface as an object moves across it or
makes an effort to move across it. There
are at least two types of friction force -
static friction and kinetic friction ( sliding
friction and rolling friction). Though it is
not always the case, the friction force
often opposes the motion of an object. For
example, if a book slides across the
surface of a desk, then the desk exerts a
friction force in the opposite direction of
• Friction is caused by the irregularities
in the surfaces of objects that are
touching.
• Even very smooth surfaces have
microscopic irregularities that obstruct
motion.
• If friction were absent, a moving object
would need no force whatever to
remain in motion.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
What we know is...
If earth has an iron core does it
mean that earth is a huge magnet?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
A Huge Bar Magnet?
Moving molten
iron in Earth’s
outer core
causes most of
Earth’s magnetic
field.

Magnetic field
poles are NOT
aligned with
geographic
poles. They also
wander and flip
(500,000 yrs between
flips, 10,000 yrs to
complete flip).
The Earth acts as a huge
magnet. This is because
the Earths solid iron core is
surrounded with hot molten
iron which moves around it.
This churning iron creates
an electric current that
generates a magnetic field
around the planet.
Magnetic fields around the planets behave in the
same way as a bar magnet. But at high
temperatures, metals lose their magnetic
properties. So it’s clear that Earth’s hot iron core
isn’t what creates the magnetic field around our
planet.

On Earth, flowing of liquid metal in the outer core

of the planet generates electric currents. The
rotation of Earth on its axis causes these electric
currents to form a magnetic field which extends
around the planet.

The magnetic field is extremely important to

sustaining life on Earth. Without it, we would be
exposed to high amounts of radiation from the Sun
and our atmosphere would be free to leak into
space.
What we know is...
Why are auroras formed in polar regions only?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
We believe that...

An aurora (plura: auroras), sometimes referred to as

POLAR LIGHTS, NORTHERN LIGHTS (Aurora
Borealis) or SOUTHERN LIGHTS (Aurora Australis),
is a natural light display in the Earth’s sky.

Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is

sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind and the
trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and
magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of
electrons and protons.
