Bar magnet Stand and clamp
Paper clip Thread (white or black)
Iron nail Index card
Plastic ruler Wooden ruler
coin
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Let’s do the...
Procedure:
1.Make your own Floating Paperclip by
clamping a rod magnet vertically.
2.Tie a paper clip to a thread and tape the
other end of the thread to the base of the
stand, such that the clip is still help up by
the magnet, but leaving a gap between the
two.
3.Slide on the gap the iron nail, plastic ruler,
wooden ruler and index card. Observe what
will happen to the paper clip.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
We observe that...
Guide Questions:

through the gap without dropping the
paper clip?
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

2.Fish out the materials one by one
using a magnet tied at the end of the
yarn.
3.List down the materials attracted by
the magnet.
4.List down the materials which cannot
be picked with the magnet.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
We observe that...

A Huge Bar Magnet?
Moving molten
iron in Earth’s
outer core
causes most of
Earth’s magnetic
field.
Magnetic field
poles are NOT
aligned with
geographic
poles. They also
wander and flip
(500,000 yrs between
flips, 10,000 yrs to
complete flip).
The Earth acts as a huge
magnet. This is because
the Earths solid iron core is
surrounded with hot molten
iron which moves around it.
This churning iron creates
an electric current that
generates a magnetic field
around the planet.
Magnetic fields around the planets behave in the
same way as a bar magnet. But at high
temperatures, metals lose their magnetic
properties. So it’s clear that Earth’s hot iron core
isn’t what creates the magnetic field around our
planet.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
We should be able to...
Objective:
1.describe the force exerted by a magnet
Materials:
2 bar magnets
Manila paper
Marker
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Procedure:
1.Identify the north pole and the south pole of the
magnets.
2. Place the two bar magnets on the table 5 cm away
from each. Both the north poles of the magnet should be
facing each other. Observe what happens. What happens
when you try moving one magnet closer to the other
magnet.
3. Repeat step 2 with both south poles of the bar
magnets facing each other. Observe what happens. What
happens when you try moving one magnet closer to the
other magnet.
4. Repeat step 2 with the north pole and the south pole of
the bar magnets facing each other. Observe what
happens. What happens when you try moving one
magnet closer to the other magnet.
What we know is...
Guide Questions:
1.What happened to the magnets when
their like poles were brought closer
to each other?
2.What happened to the magnets when
their unlike poles were brought
closer to each other?
3.What general statement can be
formulated?
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
