Computer is an electronic device that takes input from the user through input

devices , processes it under the control of instructions called program and

provides output to the user through output devices.
Computer consists of Hardware and Software .
Hardware is the physical aspect of the computer, the thing we can touch such
as monitor, hard disk ,etc.
Software is the collection of instructions that enable the user to interact with
the computer such as operating system.
Software can be classified into System software and Application Software.
Application Software is the software created for specific purpose. Example:-MS-
office, Railway reservation system etc
System Software is the software that is designed to run a computer’s hardware
and application programs such as Operating system
• Operating system is the system software that acts as interface
between computer’s hardware and the applications that run on it.
• Operating system is a collection of software that manages
computer hardware resources.
• It allows us to write programs without bothering much about the
hardware
• It also ensures that the computer’s resources such as its CPU, hard
disk and memory are appropriately utilized.
• Application programs requires an operating system to function
• DOS,Windows, Linux, Unix, Android are the examples of operating
system.
