Upper Eyelid Anatomy
EXAMINATION OF NORMAL EYELID

Skin intact, smooth

Similar in color to the face

No sclera visible above the corneas


when eyelids are open

Ability to completely close the eyelids

Binking symmetrical ~ 15 - 20 blinks

FUNCTION OF EYELIDS
• Protection from external environment
• Maintain integrity of corneal surface
• Maintain proper position of globe within orbit
• Regulate amount of light
• Cosmesis

METHOD OF EXAMINATION
• Gross examination
• Eyelid measurement
• Snap back test / distraction test
• Tearing and lacrimal apparatus irrigation
• Probing and irrigation
• Dye dissapearance test
• Jones test
LEVATOR FUNCTION MEASUREMENT

• Place thumb against brow to stop


frontalis
• Patient look down, then look up
• Measure with ruler
• Normal : > 15mm
• Good : > 12mm
• Poor : < 4mm
