The Compost Pit

Compost is a good and cheap way

to make organic fertilizer. It
doesn’t contain any harmful
chemicals.
To build a compost pit is a one
way to create and maintain
compost material.
Plants and leaves are the
organic material that can
decomposed to create a
compost.
Requirements of a Compost Pit

1. Find an area that has partial shade

throughout the day. The shades keeps the
compost pile from drying out.
2. Determine how big the compost pit needs to
be. A good size to start with would be three
wide by five feet long and about a foot or so
deep.
3. Dig a predetermined area to the
approximate size of the compost pit.
4. Remove excess dirt and roots from the
freshly dug pit.
5. Add materials such as grass clippings, leaves,
or leftover vegetables to the compost pit.
6. Turn the compost pile regularly, at
least once a week. This will allow the
compost pile to breathe while the
material decomposes more evenly.
7. Lightly wet the compost pile with a hose if
the sun is shinning on the pit too long.
8. Do not compress the compost in the pit too
much to avoid a rotting smell to smell.
