Assessment
Development, Validity &
Reliability of DAP:SPED
• Draw A Person: Screening Procedure for Emotional
Disturbance - DAP:SPED was developed by Jack A.
Naglieri, Timothy J. McNeish & Achilles N. Bardos
during 1991
• They researched over 70 years of Draw a Person
Interpretations only to realize that the scoring rules
were vague and lacked objectivity and had low
reliability.
• The tests represented more emotional vulnerability in
drawings of children hence making it import to assess
them through a valid system.
• 2,260 children (6780 drawings were evaluated on 93
items) of Ages 6 - 17 years were administered with the
tests DAP:SPED. Total Test Reliabilities are
Ages 6-8 = .76
Ages 9-12 = .77
Ages 13-17 = .71
Good psychometric properties
Why DAP:SPED
Easy and objective scoring

Standardized on a representative
sample
Empirically sound
DAP:SPED Is not a complete diagnostic test but
rather a initial screening test.

Children best communicate through drawings

and since DAP:SPED analyses the drawings of

using The test itself gives scope of further analysis
DAP:SPED and the psychologist can focus on problem
areas and make other evaluations,

HOW TO ADMINISTER DAP:SPED
• The DAP:SPED test can be administered in group or with Individuals.
• Can be administered on children from age group 6-17years old.
• The time to administer is a maximum of five minutes for each drawing which are
labeled man, woman and self
• The directions provided should be clear and must be repeated if children need
repeating. It must be non persuasive and non threatening.
• Directions would go like this, I would like you to draw some pictures for me, First I
would like you to Draw a man. Make the very best picture that you can. Take your
time and Draw very carefully and I will tell you where to stop. Remember, be sure
to draw the whole man. Please begin (Give five minutes and then stop, repeat the
same instructions for woman and self)
• The time to administer is a maximum of five minutes for each drawing which are
labeled man, woman and self. The individual or group is instruct to draw, a
picture of a man with the page labeled man, woman or self
• Once the picture had been taken, make sure to use
the correct age appropriate template to make
scoring.
• There are 3 age appropriate templates
Ages 6-8, 9-12, 13-17
• DAP:SPED comprises of 55 scoring criteria/items
SCORING IN that are applied for the three (Man, woman & self)
drawings separately.
DAP: SPED • The raw scores from all three drawings are then
converted to T-scores.
• The first nine items refer to the physical aspects of
drawings where as the last remaining items are

Scoring Details (Physical Dimension)
Tall Figure
Give a score of 1 if the distance between the uppermost and the lowermost
points of the figure is greater than the height of Line 1. score 0 if other wise.
Short Figure
Assign a score 1 if the distance between the uppermost point of the figure
and the lowermost point of the figure is less than Line 2.

A score of 1 is assigned if the figure exceeds both the vertical and horizontal
dimensions of Box 3

above Line 5
Scoring Details (Physical Dimensions)
Bottom Placement
A score of “1” when any part of the figure is in Box 6 and the figure is entirely
below Line.
Left Placement

1.

Analysis and Interpretation Demo
Scoring
• Scoring starts with computing the chronological age of the individual.
• Second, summing the raw scores for the man, woman, and self-drawing to
obtain the DAP: SPED total raw score.
• The third step is to convert the Draw A Person (DAP) total raw score to a
standard score using the appropriate table in this manual by age (6-8, 9-12,
and 13-17) and gender and recorded on the Record Form
• Further Evaluation indicates the final scores
If the score is smaller than 55 (<55), Emotional disturbances is not indicated
If the Score is in between T scores 55-65, Emotional disturbances indicated
If the score is Greater than 65 (>65), Emotional disturbance is strongly
indicated
Reporting is as important as Evaluation and
Interpretations.

The reports are a strong statement of what

does the results indicate, how relevant are
Reporting they and if any previous assumptions or
hypothesis are made they serve as prove to
these hypothesis.

A professional report holds Clinical and Legal

value.
